The Acid Test

The acid test of faith is not clever words but good fruit. Learn how Jesus teaches us to recognize truth and seek God’s glory, not our own. Often we question the authenticity and sincerity of someone who claims to represent Christ. Rightly so! After all, not every voice that speaks about God truly speaks for God. Thankfully, Jesus gave us a simple and reliable way to tell the difference. Even better, that same test reaches past the pulpit and gently into our own hearts.

Scripture Focus

First, Jesus explains how we can know whether a teaching truly comes from God:

If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.”
— John 7:17–18 (ESV)

Next, Jesus warns us to look beneath the surface:

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?”
— Matthew 7:15–16 (ESV)

Then Paul describes the kind of fruit God’s Spirit grows in His people:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
— Galatians 5:22–23 (ESV)

Finally, Paul turns the test toward each of us:

“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”
— 2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV)

Together, these passages give us a clear and loving test. So let’s look at how it works in everyday life.

Life Application

The Acid Test of Faith Begins with Jesus

Long ago, gold buyers used a drop of acid to test a nugget. Cheap metal would fizz and change color. Real gold, however, stayed bright and unchanged. That is where we get the phrase “acid test.”

In John 7, Jesus faced a crowd full of questions. Some people said He was a good man. Others claimed He was leading people astray. So Jesus gave them a test. First, He said that anyone who truly wants to do God’s will will recognize God’s truth. Then He pointed to motive. A teacher who speaks on his own authority is chasing his own glory. By contrast, a teacher who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is true.

That is the acid test of faith. Whose glory is this person really seeking?

You Will Recognize Them by Their Fruits

Jesus knew we would need this test. In the Sermon on the Mount, He warned about false prophets dressed like sheep. On the outside they look gentle and harmless. Inside, though, they tell another story. Therefore, Jesus told us not to judge by the costume but by the fruit.

Fruit takes time to grow. It shows up in ordinary days, not just on a stage. Here is a simple list of the kind of fruit a genuine follower of Jesus produces:

• Forgive.
• Tell the truth.
• Love others.
• Train your children.
• Honor your parents.
• Give generously.
• Gather with God’s people.
• Love your enemies.
• Kill your pride.
• Serve others.
• Pray.
• Make disciples.

None of these fruits make headlines. Yet each one quietly points away from self and toward God.

Turn the Test Around

Here is where the test becomes personal. Before we examine anyone else, Paul invites us to examine ourselves. Honestly, that list can humble any of us. Maybe forgiveness has been hard lately. Perhaps pride crept back into a conversation at work. Or your prayer life may have grown thin.

Take heart, friend. The fruit on that list is not something we manufacture by willpower. Instead, it is the fruit of the Spirit. Jesus grows it in us as we stay close to Him. A branch does not strain to produce grapes. It simply abides in the vine (John 15:5).

Consequently, this test is not meant to crush you. Its purpose is to draw you back to Christ. When you fall short, run to His grace rather than away from it.

Living for His Glory Today

So how does this change your life today? Start small by asking the Lord, “Whose glory am I seeking in this?” Bring that question to your conversations and your social media posts. Carry it into your service at church. Likewise, let it shape how you give and how you guide your children.

When your honest answer is “Yours, Lord,” you are passing the acid test of faith. Better still, you are becoming more like Jesus, who always sought His Father’s glory. And there is real freedom in that. You no longer have to prove yourself. After all, Christ has already proven His love for you at the cross.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word as our sure guide. Thank You for Jesus, who always sought Your glory and never His own. Please give me wisdom to recognize truth and discernment to see past appearances. Most of all, search my heart, Lord. Where pride has taken root, pull it out. Where love has grown cold, warm it again. Help me forgive freely, give generously, and serve gladly. Let the fruit of Your Spirit grow in me today, so that my life points others to You. May everything I do bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
