Mothers…The Face of God | A Mother’s Devotion

Mother praying with child
Godly Motherhood

Introduction

Discover how a mother’s faith and love beautifully reflect the heart of God in this inspiring day after Mother’s Day devotion.  Motherhood is one of the clearest reflections of the heart of God that many of us will ever experience. Through a mother’s sacrifice, tenderness, persistence, and unconditional love, we often catch our earliest glimpse of God’s compassion toward His children. This heartfelt Day after Mother’s Day devotion, is adapted from a letter written by our friend Johnny to his beloved daughter, Cindy, and shared with permission, beautifully honors the faith, courage, and humility found in godly mothers everywhere.

In Matthew 15, Jesus encounters a desperate mother whose relentless faith becomes a timeless portrait of love. Her determination to seek healing for her child reminds us that mothers carry a God-given strength that refuses to give up. Furthermore, her humility and confidence in Christ reveal the spiritual beauty of a heart surrendered to God.

“God could not be everywhere, and therefore He made mothers.” — often attributed to Jewish proverb

Devotional Reflection

Our friend Johnny, who faithfully writes devotions for DevotionsDoneDaily.com four days each week, shared this touching Mother’s Day letter honoring his daughter Cindy, and the many mothers who have reflected God’s love throughout his life. His words remind us that motherhood is not simply a role; rather, it is a divine calling woven deeply into the heart of God Himself.

Johnny writes that for years he has believed we first see “the face of God” through our mothers. Although we may not fully understand it as children, maturity often helps us recognize how profoundly a mother’s love mirrors the Lord’s own compassion, patience, mercy, and sacrificial care.

In Matthew chapter 15, we meet a Canaanite mother whose daughter was suffering terribly. At first glance, this passage appears to be a simple healing story. However, when we carefully examine the text through the eyes of a mother, we discover a breathtaking portrait of determined love and unwavering faith.

The Unnamed Woman

This unnamed woman crossed ethnic and cultural boundaries just to reach Jesus. At that time, Jews and Canaanites rarely associated with one another. Even the disciples urged Jesus to send her away. Nevertheless, this mother refused to let rejection silence her because her love for her daughter was stronger than fear, shame, or discouragement.

Furthermore, she recognized Jesus as “Lord” and “Son of David,” acknowledging Him as the Messiah while many others still doubted Him. Then, when Jesus initially remained silent, she persisted with humility instead of bitterness. She knelt before Christ and pleaded for mercy, asking only for “a crumb” from the Master’s table.

What remarkable faith, extraordinary humility and relentless love!

This mother demonstrated several qualities that beautifully reflect the heart of God:

  • Undaunted courage to cross difficult barriers
  • Quiet endurance in the face of rejection
  • Perseverance that refused to give up
  • Humility before the King of Kings
  • Total dependence upon Jesus Christ
  • Deep sacrificial love for her child

Mother’s Are Special

Johnny shared that he witnessed these same qualities in both his birth mother and in Kaye, the mother of their four children. Many of us can say the same. When we think about the mothers who shaped our lives, we remember their prayers, sacrifices, tears, encouragement, and unwavering devotion.

Mothers often fight battles nobody sees. They pray long after everyone else has gone to sleep, carry burdens silently, and encourage their children while hiding their own exhaustion. In countless quiet ways, they reflect the faithful love of God every single day.

Therefore, this Mother’s Day is more than a celebration of family tradition. It is an opportunity to thank God for women who reveal His compassion and grace through their daily lives.

Whether you are a mother by birth, adoption, mentorship, or spiritual influence, your love matters deeply. God sees every sacrifice, every prayer, every sleepless night, and every act of kindness.

Proverbs 31 reminds us that a godly woman’s value is “far above rubies.” Her life leaves a spiritual legacy that reaches generations beyond what she may ever fully realize on earth.

Today, may every mother reading this devotion hear these words clearly:
You are seen.
You are appreciated.
You are deeply loved.
And through your faithful love, many have seen the face of God.
