Finding Purpose in Every Season

Cross at sunrise representing purpose and hope

Introduction

Finding purpose in every season is possible because God has a plan for each of us. In this  devotion we’ll explore what it means to find purpose in every season—young or old—and how one life surrendered to God still makes a difference. May this encouragement stir your heart to keep serving and sharing Jesus today.

Morning Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to the purpose You have placed before me today. Help me live it with humility and joy. Amen.

Devotion

What is your purpose? Explore the journey of finding purpose in every season and discover how God’s plan applies to everyone in all ages.

A while back I was having a R.O.M.E.O. lunch ( retired old men eating out) with my dear friend Charles L. of Indianapolis.  This was a unique lunch, because we chose to each bring our own brown bag meal to my home.  It was just the two of us…and God.    Charles who is a deep thinker, brought up the topic of “purpose.”    As in:

At this stage of life (74)  Do you/we still feel that we have a real motivating purpose?

Are we still relevant….making a difference…still contributing?

Do we still count for something worthwhile?

More recently I was visiting with a young lady and she indicated that she is still thinking about her true purpose.

She is a wonderful Mom, spouse, successful and accomplished professional… but she is still seeking her “purpose.”

I have mentored with countless college seniors since my retirement 25 years ago.  I lure them in offering interview training but once we are together we spend much more time discussing “Where they want to go in their lives or What is their purpose?”  Some of these discussions go on for two full days together.  We search together to find purpose in every season.

Famous people have had much to say on this topic:

  • “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.
  • “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” – John F. Kennedy.
  • “Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.” – Buddha.
  • “The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” – Robert Byrne.

The Bible has much to say about Purpose…Here are just a few selected verses.  There are many more.

  • Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
  • Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
  • Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
  • Proverbs 16:9
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
  • Psalm 138:8
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

In Conclusion

Over that brown bag lunch in my home that day,  I shared with my friend Charles L that I have had a life Blessed throughout with purpose, but that now in the twilight of my life, I feel more rewarded with purpose than ever before by way of helping in my little way to spread the word of God and Jesus Christ who lived among us, to those precious souls who read these humble messages each day.   How could anything be more rewarding than sharing the good news of Jesus Christ -God among us –  and perhaps assisting souls in some small way to accept Him and achieve eternal salvation.  Each of you who reads this is a precious Blessing to me….and to God.

So to answer my friend Charles L.’s question…. My Purpose is to know God and to make him known to others.

May you be Blessed with such a PURPOSE!

  • Reflect: Where has God used you to bless someone this week?
  • Decide: Choose one small way to serve today (call, pray, give time).
  • Act: Do it before the day ends and watch what God does.
