Where Is Your Ebenezer?

Discover what your Ebenezer stone could be and why remembering God’s faithfulness builds lasting trust for tomorrow.   Good morning, friend. Have you ever wanted a physical reminder of a moment when God showed up? Samuel needed one too. After the Lord scattered the Philistines and rescued Israel from certain defeat, Samuel took a stone and set it up as a permanent marker of God’s help. He named it Ebenezer — “stone of help.” Today, let’s talk about the Ebenezer stones in your own life, and why remembering them matters more than you might think.

The cost is zero…the value is priceless and eternal.

Before we dig into God’s Word, let’s prepare our hearts with “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” Few hymns capture gratitude for God’s help as beautifully as this one does.

Scripture Focus

Our verse today comes from 1 Samuel, right after a hard-fought victory the Israelites never could have won on their own.

“Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, ‘Till now the LORD has helped us.'”
— 1 Samuel 7:12 (ESV)

Samuel didn’t erect that stone to impress anyone passing by. He built it so that every time Israel walked past it, they would remember exactly who had rescued them.

Life Application

A Stone Worth Setting Up

The Lord provided a sound defeat of the Philistines that day, right when defeat seemed certain for Israel. Samuel understood something we often forget: victories fade from memory faster than we’d like. Therefore, he placed a stone as a permanent monument, refusing to let Israel’s gratitude quietly slip away.

That stone wasn’t magic. It was a marker — a physical object pointing to an invisible God who had proven Himself faithful. Every time someone passed that spot, the stone whispered the same testimony: “Till now, the LORD has helped us.”

Your Own Ebenezer

Christians still encounter Ebenezer moments today. Maybe Jesus answered a prayer you’d almost given up on. Perhaps He carried you safely through a diagnosis, a financial crisis, or a broken relationship. Sometimes He simply replaces anxiety with an unexplainable calm right when you need it most.

I wear my own Ebenezer stone inconspicuously — a small cross resting near my heart. When worry creeps in, I reach up and touch it. In that instant, I’m reminded all over again that Jesus lives in me, and He hasn’t brought me this far to abandon me now.

So here’s the question worth sitting with this morning: what is your Ebenezer stone? It doesn’t have to be jewelry. It might be a verse taped to your bathroom mirror, a photograph, or simply a memory you return to when life feels uncertain.

Why Remembering Matters

Memory shapes faith. When you deliberately recall what God has already done, you build confidence for what He’s still doing. Doubt often grows in forgetfulness, while trust grows in remembrance. Consequently, setting up your own Ebenezer — in whatever form fits your life — isn’t sentimental. It’s spiritual strategy.

This morning, take a moment to establish your own tribute to the Lord for what He has done for you. Write it down. Speak it aloud. Wear it if that helps. Whatever form it takes, let it become your own quiet declaration: “Till now, the LORD has helped me.”

He’s Not Finished

Ebenezer isn’t just a look backward — it’s fuel for looking forward. The same God who helped you yesterday is already present in tomorrow’s unknowns. Your stone of remembrance becomes a launching pad for fresh trust, not just a monument to the past.

Corrie ten Boom, who trusted God through unimaginable circumstances, once said something worth carrying with you today: “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Your Ebenezer stones are proof that He is, in fact, known — and knowable — in every season.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for every stone of remembrance You’ve allowed us to set up along the way. Forgive us for the times we forget so quickly what You’ve already done. Help us to recall Your faithfulness boldly, and to trust You with the same confidence for whatever lies ahead. Give us eyes to see today’s help and tomorrow’s hope. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Let’s close today with “Through It All” by Hillsong Worship — a powerful reminder that God’s faithfulness carries us through every season, not just the easy ones.
