The Rising Sun From Heaven – Advent Devotion

Sunrise representing Christ the Dayspring
Heavenly Sunrise

Introduction

Explore Zechariah’s prophecy about The Rising Sun from Heaven and the dawn of redemption in Luke’s Gospel.  In the opening chapter of Luke’s Gospel, an elderly priest named Zechariah lifts his voice in Spirit-filled prophecy over his newborn son, John the Baptist. What he speaks is more than a father’s blessing—it is a declaration that the long-awaited dawn of redemption has begun. John will be the forerunner, the one who prepares hearts for the coming Messiah. And through him, God announces that the “dayspring from on high”—the Rising Sun of Heaven—is about to break over a world long held in shadows.

Reflective Quotation

“When the Spirit of God comes into a man, He does not come to give him extraordinary qualities; He comes to give him the qualities of Jesus.” — Oswald Chambers

The Rising Sun From Heaven

Zechariah’s prophecy in Luke 1:76–79 is a breathtaking moment in Scripture. For four hundred years, Israel had waited through prophetic silence. Suddenly, God speaks again—and His message is unmistakable: The Messiah is near.

“You, child,” he says of John, “will be called the prophet of the Most High.” John’s mission is clear—prepare the way of the Lord by proclaiming the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of sins (Luke 1:76–77). Salvation is not political. Not military. Not philosophical. It is God’s mercy poured out to sinners.

Then comes the promise that still stirs the soul today: “Because of the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high will break upon us” (Luke 1:78). The word dayspring speaks of sunrise—light suddenly spilling over the horizon, ending the long night. Jesus is that Light. He shines on those dwelling “in darkness and the shadow of death” (v. 79), guiding our feet into the way of peace.

Matthew’s Gospel confirms that John fulfilled this role precisely. He preached repentance, cried out in the wilderness just as Isaiah foretold, and baptized with water while pointing to One far greater—One who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matthew 1:1–3; 3:11). And when Jesus stepped into the Jordan River, the heavens opened, the Spirit descended, and the Father declared, “This is My Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

The dawn had come. The Rising Sun had risen.

Life Application

Where do you need the Rising Sun of Heaven to shine in your life today?
Are there areas of fear, guilt, or confusion that still feel like shadows?

Jesus has come not only to forgive sins but to guide your steps into peace—real peace, not the fragile sort the world offers. Invite Him to shine into the hidden places of your heart. Ask Him to help you walk in the light, to free you from the patterns of darkness, and to let His mercy illuminate each decision and each day.

The same dawn that broke over Israel through the coming of Jesus continues to break over His people now. The Light has come—and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Prophecies Fulfilled

This Advent we celebrate the extraordinary truth that Jesus fulfilled prophecy with mathematical impossibility. The odds of one man fulfilling just eight prophecies is 1 in 100 quadrillion. Jesus fulfilled over 300. He is not merely a great teacher or a wise man—He is God in the flesh, the true Messiah sent to redeem the world. (Source: Mathematician Peter Stoner)

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, Rising Sun from Heaven, shine Your light into my heart today.
Lift any shadows that remain in me, guide my feet into the way of peace,
and help me walk faithfully in Your truth.
Thank You for coming to save, to forgive, and to lead.
Amen.
