Forgiving Like Jesus and Joseph

Cross at sunset with two people demonstrating forgiveness
Biblical Forgiveness

Introduction

Explore the transformative power of forgiving like Jesus and learn how grace can guide your heart towards true forgiveness.  Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful and costly gifts God gives—and asks us to give. In our Ascent Bible study on April 22, 2025, we explored the depth of biblical forgiveness through the examples of Jesus on the cross and Joseph in Egypt. Their responses to betrayal and suffering reveal a pattern for every believer: forgiveness is not just an act—it is a posture of the heart grounded in trust.

Forgiving Like Jesus and Joseph

Forgiveness isn’t easy—but it’s divine. Only God can help us forgive in ways that exceed human strength, reason, and instinct. When Jesus hung on the cross, His body torn by suffering, He did not condemn His executioners. Instead, He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). In His deepest agony, mercy overflowed.

Joseph demonstrated the same Spirit when he faced the very brothers who sold him into slavery. He said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good… I will provide for you and your children” (Genesis 50:20–21). Joseph released vengeance because he trusted God’s sovereignty over his story.

Both Jesus and Joseph show us that forgiveness is not about excusing the wrongdoing or pretending it didn’t hurt. Forgiveness chooses God’s story over our wounded story. It surrenders the desire for control, vindication, or repayment. It shifts our focus from “what has been done to me” to “what God can do through me.”

This kind of forgiveness goes beyond fairness—it reflects the heart of Christ. When we forgive, we release not only others but also ourselves. We step out of the cycle of pain and into the peace only God can give. Forgiveness is not weakness; it is Spirit-enabled strength.

And forgiveness doesn’t always include closure, apologies, or restored relationships. Sometimes it is quiet, private, and known only to God. But it always brings freedom. In forgiving, we choose healing over bitterness, faith over fear, and the future God promises over the past that wounded us.

Life Application

Reflection

Where are you still holding on to hurt, hoping it gives you control or protection? Who might God be inviting you to forgive today?

Closing Prayer

Lord, help me forgive as You have forgiven me. Teach me to trust You with my wounds and let go of bitterness. Make me an instrument of Your peace. Amen.
