No Excuses! God’s Creation Reveals His Glory – Romans 1:19-20

Stunning view of earth from space symbolizing God's glory revealed in creation, Romans 1:19-20
Visible Glory of God

Introduction

Romans 1:19-20 reminds us God’s glory is seen in creation. No one is without excuse. Stand amazed at the God who made it all.  Have you ever stood outside on a clear night and looked up at the stars? Or watched the sun rise over a still lake, painting the sky in colors no artist could fully capture? Or perhaps you’ve seen a newborn baby open its eyes for the very first time? In those moments, something stirs deep within us — something that whispers, this did not happen by accident.

The Apostle Paul puts it plainly and powerfully:

“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” — Romans 1:19–20

God has not hidden Himself. He has written His signature across every sunrise, every mountain range, every ocean wave, every beating heart. Creation itself is His testimony — and every one of us is a witness. Paul’s message is both deeply encouraging and sobering: no one can claim they never knew.

Quotation

“Nature is too thin a screen; the glory of the omnipresent God bursts through everywhere.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Though Emerson was not an orthodox theologian, this observation aligns powerfully with what Scripture declares — God’s presence and power are not hidden behind creation; they burst through it. As the Psalmist wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1)

Reflection

Commander Reid Wiseman, who led the Artemis II space mission, made a remarkable admission upon returning to earth. Though he described himself as not a religious man, his time in space — gazing at the earth hanging in the vast darkness of the universe — moved him so profoundly that he immediately sought out a chaplain for counsel. Something about witnessing creation from that vantage point broke through every intellectual barrier and touched the deepest part of who he is as a human being.

And that is exactly what Paul is describing in Romans 1.

God has so thoroughly woven evidence of Himself into the fabric of creation that no honest heart can look at this world and conclude it simply happened. The intricacy of a single cell. The precision of the seasons. The way the human eye processes light, color, and depth. The fact that the earth sits at precisely the right distance from the sun to sustain life. These are not coincidences — they are the fingerprints of an intentional, powerful, and personal Creator.

And here is the most wonderful part: you don’t need a rocket ship to see it.

God did not place His glory only in the far reaches of outer space, accessible to a handful of astronauts. He placed it right here — all around us, every single day. He put us in the middle of His creation. The tree in your backyard, the rain on your window, the breath in your lungs — all of it speaks of Him. All of it testifies to His eternal power and divine nature.

But Paul does not stop at wonder. He also sounds a solemn note. Because this revelation is universal and undeniable, it carries with it a serious weight of accountability:

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.” — 2 Corinthians 5:10

No excuses. Not one.

Every person who has ever lived has had access to the testimony of creation. Every person has felt that inner pull — that sense that there is something more, something greater, something holy at work in the world. The question is never whether God has revealed Himself. The question is what we do with that revelation.

For the believer, this passage is not a word of condemnation — it is a word of confirmation. You were right to look at this world and sense the hand of God, to feel that your life has meaning and purpose ….and  you were right to seek Him. And in Christ, that seeking has led you home.

Paul’s reminder of the judgment seat of Christ is not meant to produce fear in the heart of the faithful — it is meant to produce clarity and purpose. We live with eternity in view. We live knowing that this life matters, that our choices matter, that our witness to others matters. The same God whose glory is written in the stars has written His law on every human heart — and one day, every heart will stand before Him.

What a privilege, then, to know Him now. To walk with Him. To carry His name into the world and point others to the Creator they have already sensed but perhaps not yet fully known.

Commander Wiseman looked for a chaplain because creation awakened something in him that he could not explain away. Your neighbors, your coworkers, your family members — many of them have had similar moments. Moments when they looked at a mountain or held a baby or survived something impossible and thought, there must be a God.

You may be the next step in their journey. You may be the one who helps them move from sensing God in creation to knowing God through Christ.

Life Application

Today, let the world around you preach to you. Step outside — even briefly — and look at what God has made. Let creation do what Paul says it was designed to do: reveal the invisible attributes of an eternal, powerful, personal God.

  • Pause and look. Take five minutes today to observe creation intentionally — the sky, a plant, a sunrise, the stars tonight. Let it move you to worship rather than passing it by unnoticed.
  • Share the wonder. If you know someone who is spiritually searching, invite them to consider what creation is already telling them. Sometimes the most effective evangelism begins with a simple question: “Have you ever looked at this world and wondered about God?”
  • Live with eternity in mind. Paul’s words about the judgment seat of Christ are not meant to frighten us but to focus us. Ask yourself: am I living today in a way that reflects the God whose glory fills the earth?
  • Offer thanks. You did not have to travel to space to witness the glory of God. He placed you right in the center of it. Thank Him for the gift of a world that constantly points back to its Maker.
  • Be someone’s chaplain. Just as Commander Wiseman needed someone to talk to when creation overwhelmed him, be available to those around you who are being drawn toward God. Be ready with a word of grace and truth.

God has left no one without a witness. And He has left you here — in the middle of His creation — to be one of those witnesses.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for leaving Your fingerprints on everything we see. Thank You for writing Your glory into the heavens, the earth, the seasons, and even our own beating hearts. Forgive us for the times we have walked past Your creation without pausing to worship You. Open our eyes today to see You in the ordinary moments of life. Give us courage to point others — those who are searching, those who have sensed You but have not yet found You — toward the Savior who made all things and holds all things together. We stand in awe of You, Lord. And we stand ready to stand before You one day without shame, covered in the grace of Your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray, Amen.
