Anna the Prophetess: A Testimony of Faith

Elderly woman praying in the temple
Anna the Prophetess

Introduction

Learn about Anna the Prophetess, an overlooked figure in the Christmas story who exemplifies hope and perseverance.  In the Christmas story, much attention is given to angels, shepherds, wise men, and kings. Yet tucked quietly into Luke’s Gospel is the testimony of an elderly widow named Anna. She had no title, no position of influence, and no public platform. Still, God chose her to recognize and proclaim one of the greatest moments in history—the arrival of the Messiah.

Anna reminds us that faithfulness over time matters deeply to God. Her life shows us that perseverance in prayer, quiet devotion, and unwavering hope never go unnoticed in heaven.

“It is not your business to succeed, but to do right; when you have done so, the rest lies with God.”C.S. Lewis

Scripture Reading

Luke 2:36–38 (ESV)

“And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of Him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.”

Devotional Reflection

Anna was eighty-four years old, a widow for decades, and largely invisible by the world’s standards. Yet Luke describes her as a prophetess—one who listened for God’s voice and spoke His truth. Her long life had been marked by loss, but also by devotion. She chose not to grow bitter or withdrawn. Instead, she devoted herself to prayer, worship, fasting, and hope.

Day after day, year after year, Anna remained in the temple. She waited, prayed and  trusted. When Mary and Joseph arrived with the infant Jesus, Anna immediately recognized what others might have overlooked. God opened her eyes to see that this child was the long-awaited Redeemer of Jerusalem.

Notice that Anna did not keep this revelation to herself. Scripture says she “began to give thanks to God and to speak of Him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.” Her faith overflowed into testimony. The widow became a witness.

Anna teaches us that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. He also shows us that faithfulness across a lifetime carries eternal weight. While others may have come and gone, Anna stayed. While many waited silently, Anna spoke boldly. God honored her perseverance with the joy of seeing His promise fulfilled.

Life Application

  • God values lifelong faithfulness more than visible positions or titles.
  • Prayer and worship prepare our hearts to recognize God’s work.
  • No one is too old, too overlooked, or too ordinary to be used by God.

As a reminder for us today: the most spiritually mature person in a church may not be the pastor, elder, or teacher. It might be the quiet, hearing-impaired widow with a walker seated on the back pew—faithfully praying and watching for God’s redemption.

Good morning. As you go today, tell others that the Messiah has come—and praise God in the highest.

Closing Prayer

Lord, teach us to be faithful like Anna. Help us to pray without ceasing, to worship with sincerity, and to recognize Your work in our midst. May our lives testify to Your faithfulness until the very end. Amen.
