God in the Flesh

Introduction

Discover the significance of God in the Flesh. Christmas marks the moment when God entered human experience to bring redemption.  Christmas proclaims one of the most profound truths ever revealed: God did not remain distant from humanity. He stepped into time, space, and human experience. John declares that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,” revealing that the eternal God took on human nature to live among His creation. This is not poetic symbolism—it is divine reality.

The incarnation assures us that God understands our weakness, our suffering, and our need for redemption. Jesus did not come merely to observe humanity, but to redeem it from within. Christmas celebrates this holy mystery: God in the flesh.

“The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.” — C.S. Lewis

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 7:14 (ESV)

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Seven centuries before Christ, Isaiah foretold a miraculous sign: a virgin would conceive, and the child would be called Immanuel—“God with us.”

What Isaiah announced prophetically, John declares fulfilled:  John 1:14–18 (ESV) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth… For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

Devotional Reflection

God first revealed His holiness and standards through the Law given to Moses. The Law was perfect, but it revealed an uncomfortable truth: humanity could not keep it. The Law showed what righteousness looked like, but it could not transform the human heart. It exposed sin but offered no lasting solution.

Because of humanity’s inability to uphold the Law, God sent His Son. Jesus came not as a distant judge, but as God in human flesh. He lived among us, experienced temptation without sin, and demonstrated the fullness of God’s character. Where the Law revealed our failure, Jesus revealed God’s mercy.

John describes Jesus as “full of grace and truth.” Truth reveals that Jesus is the Son of God, the only One who perfectly reflects the Father. Grace reveals God’s unmerited favor toward sinners—favor not earned, but freely given through faith in Christ. Truth without grace condemns, but grace without truth deceives. In Jesus, both are perfectly united.

John emphasizes that believers have received “grace upon grace.” This phrase speaks of an ongoing supply, not a one-time gift. Jesus does not abandon us when we fall short. His grace continues to meet us again and again, renewing, restoring, and strengthening us. Grace upon grace reminds us that God’s mercy is not exhausted by our weakness.

As Christmas carols fill the air this season, it is fitting to pause and sing words that echo this truth: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” That amazing grace arrived wrapped in flesh, born in humility, and destined for the cross.

The incarnation is not merely a historical event—it is a present reality. Jesus is still alive. Through the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in every believer. God is still “with us,” working in and through His people. The same Word who dwelt among us now dwells within us.

Advent Thread:

We are approaching advent this year with each daily devotion focused on some of the prophesies that were fulfilled by the life of Jesus.  The odds of a man fulfilling just 8 prophesies:  1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. That is 1 in 100 quadrillion. A quadrillion is 1000 trillion.  Jesus fulfilled over 300.  He is not just a man.  He is GOD.  (Source:  Mathematician Peter Stoner)
