Listening to God during Advent

You Shall Listen — Advent Devotion

Listening to God during Advent
Listen to God

Introduction

Join our Advent devotional journey and learn to listen to Jesus, the prophet promised by Moses to guide our hearts.  As we enter Day 2 of our Advent devotional journey, we continue preparing our hearts to celebrate the birth of our Savior—Jesus Christ, the long-awaited Messiah. As four writers alternate daily, our shared hope is that each devotion draws you closer to Christ and strengthens your walk with Him during this sacred season.  Today’s focus comes from the ancient words of Moses—words spoken more than 1,500 years before Christ stepped into our world. In Deuteronomy 18:15, Moses told the Israelites that God Himself would raise up a prophet from among them—a prophet to whom they must listen. Moses was pointing to Jesus, the One who would not merely carry God’s Word, but embody it.

Quotation

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.”
This reminds us that true listening involves trust—even when God leads in ways we do not fully understand.

Reflection

Mankind has always searched for leaders—kings, princes, emperors, chiefs, presidents, military commanders. Every nation throughout history has elevated individuals to positions of authority, hoping they would bring order, direction, and hope. But human leadership, no matter how strong, always falls short.

In contrast, God chose Moses—not because he was impressive, but because he was obedient—to lead Israel out of Egyptian bondage and toward the Promised Land. Yet even Moses, one of the greatest figures in Scripture, pointed beyond himself. He said that God would raise up a Prophet like him, but greater—One who would speak the very heart of God. Moses then gave a command, not a suggestion: “It is to Him you shall listen.”

When Jesus came, He fulfilled this prophetic promise with unmatched authority. He spoke not as a messenger merely carrying the Word, but as the Word made flesh (John 1:14). His voice carried healing, truth, correction, and eternal life.

But Moses’ command echoes across the centuries to us today: You shall listen to Him., Not casually, not occasionally, but with intentional, daily obedience.

Jesus speaks into our present lives the same way He spoke to the crowds who followed Him, saying: “I came that you might have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

To listen to Jesus is to choose life., walk in His peace, and step into the abundant life only He can give.

As we move through Advent, let us tune our hearts to His voice. Let us reduce the noise, quiet our racing minds, and say as Samuel once did: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.”

Life Application

  • Take five quiet minutes today and ask the Lord to speak through His Word.
  • Read John 10 and listen intentionally for what Jesus says about Himself and about you.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas of your life where you’ve been listening to other voices more than Christ’s.
  • Pray for a teachable heart throughout the Advent season.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, open our ears to hear Your voice. Quiet every competing noise and tune our hearts to Your Word.
As we journey through Advent, help us listen deeply, trust fully, and obey joyfully.
Speak, Lord—Your servants are listening. Amen.
