Do You Have a Burden for the Lost?

Friends helping friends find Jesus
Bearing a Burden For The Lost

Introduction

Do you have a burden for someone who does not yet know Christ? In Luke 2:3-6, we read of four men who carried their paralyzed friend to Jesus, opening a roof just to place him before the Savior. Their compassion and faith demonstrate how deep a burden for others can move us to action. This passage reminds us that the presence of Jesus and His power to heal go hand in hand with the willingness of believers to intercede for others. Carrying someone spiritually is part of our calling as witnesses of His grace.

Scripture

“And they came, bringing to him (Jesus) a paralytic carried by four men.  When they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.'” (Luke 2:3-6)

Message

There are several lessons within this story: Jesus’ divine authority to forgive and heal, the presence of doubters like the Pharisees, and the unwavering faith of the four men who carried their friend. Yet, behind it all is the “story behind the story” — the burden these men carried for their paralyzed friend. They refused to let obstacles keep them from bringing him to Christ.

In the same way, we all know people who need Jesus — neighbors, coworkers, teammates, classmates, and even family members. They may never walk into a church on their own. That is why every Christian has a shared responsibility to be a witness, pointing others to Christ. Like those four men, we are called not only to help carry physical needs but also to bear spiritual burdens by faithfully interceding in prayer and sharing the hope of the gospel.

Life Application

Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” If Christ lives in us, our hearts should reflect His compassion for the lost. The more His presence fills our lives, the stronger our burden for others will become. Ask yourself today: who is the one person you can help “carry” to Jesus through prayer, encouragement, or an invitation? Just as those four men refused to give up, let us persevere in faith for the sake of those who need the Great Physician.
