Let Us Pray

Father God, thank You for the people You bring into our lives. Help us to see each one as part of Your plan for our growth. Teach us to respond with wisdom, patience, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In Chapter 4 of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, Paul — the mentor — offers Timothy several insights and warnings about those surrounding him in ministry. It’s striking how the same types of people still appear in our lives today. Some things do not change. Paul names four specific men, each representing a different kind of relationship:

  • “Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm” (2 Timothy 4:14). There will be people like Alexander who intentionally hurt you.
  • “Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me” (v10). Like Demas, some will disappoint and abandon you when you need them most.
  • “Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me” (v11). Mark had once failed Paul but eventually surprised him with growth and usefulness. People can change for the better.
  • “Luke alone is with me” (v11). Luke stayed. He represents the faithful few who will remain by your side no matter what.

You’ll meet all four types in your church, workplace, or family. Some will wound you. Others will disappoint. A few will surprise you. And, praise God, some will never leave your side. This passage reminds us that relationships are part of our spiritual journey. They test and refine us. They teach us grace, boundaries, endurance, and loyalty. What matters is how we respond. Will we become bitter or better? Defensive or discerning? As you navigate life today, look for the Marks and Lukes. Thank God for them. And even when you encounter an Alexander or Demas, remember: you’re not alone — Paul walked that road too.
