Let Us Pray

Lord, thank You for the friends and mentors You’ve placed in our lives. Help us to recognize their wisdom, embrace their counsel, and offer the same to others. Amen.

Introduction

The counsel of a friend can guide you through life’s wilderness. Like Moses, lean on those God sends to walk with you in hard seasons.  Counsel of a friend brings clarity, strength, and direction in the wilderness seasons of life. God often sends guidance through those who have walked through trials themselves.

The Sweetness of Earnest Counsel

In Numbers 10:29–32, we find Moses preparing to lead Israel toward the Promised Land. Yet he turns to Hobab, his brother-in-law, and pleads, “Please do not leave us, for you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will serve as eyes for us.” Although God was guiding them by cloud and fire, Moses recognized the practical wisdom and lived experience of a trusted companion.

Even strong leaders need help. Even Moses sought human insight while following divine instruction. In the same way, God places people in our paths to help us through uncertain seasons. They may not share our exact experiences, but they understand the terrain of pain, loss, or confusion.

Proverbs 27:9 reminds us, “Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.” This counsel—heartfelt and honest—has the power to revive weary souls. It doesn’t need to come from someone who knows your every detail. It simply comes from someone who knows the depths of suffering and the value of walking with God through it.

Consider these truths:

  • A friend may not know your pain, but they do know pain.
  • They may not have lost what you did, but they understand loss.
  • They might not have lived your specific job loss, but they have endured disappointment.
  • They may not know your relationship wounds, but they know what it means to be broken.

So don’t walk alone. Someone is willing to guide you with insight earned in their own wilderness. Trust that God is working through those relationships to help carry you forward.

Good morning as you taste the sweetness of the counsel of a friend.

I have been blessed with several friends that have helped guide me through my Life Time. They all hold a special place in my heart. Through them, Christ is speaking to me.
