Last Friday,June 27th, in Indianapolis, I had a R.O.M.E.O. (Retired Old Men Eating Out) lunch with my dear friend at The World Famous Mississippi Belle, my favorite soul food restaurant here in Indianapolis. He shared that he is now doing dialysis seven hours each night at home while he sleeps. Like me, he is a walking miracle. Like me, he laughs and cries when he talks about the things that make God laugh and cry. We prayed, together, gave thanks, and felt our faith in God as we shared our blessings.
Our waitress, likely in her sixties, looked thin and weathered—her face evidence of life’s hardships. Nearly in tears, she told us her old truck had broken down and she was struggling. Economically, we were worlds apart—but one and the same in our faith in God.
Faith That Transforms
Faith in God is the cornerstone of the Christian life—a deep trust in His promises and character. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Jesus said, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move,’ and it will move” (Matthew 17:20). Faith conquers fear and gives us hope. James 2:26 reminds us that faith must be active: “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” And in 2 Corinthians 5:7, Paul writes, “For we live by faith, not by sight.”
Christ, Our Cornerstone
Isaiah 28:16 says, “So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.’” Christ is our cornerstone. His resurrection is the solid foundation of our faith. All else aligns with Him.
When our meal ended, my friend and I left a generous tip for the waitress with the broken truck. She found it. Then we all cried and hugged. There was gratitude. There was love. Without a doubt, God was in the midst. I asked her name. Her name was Faith.
Let Us Pray
Lord, thank You for faith. Help us walk by faith and not by sight. Remind us You are always with us. Amen.
