Don’t Ever Sell Your Saddle – Find The Lord Before You Need Him

Scripture Focus

Isaiah 46:4 “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Hebrews 13:5 “Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.’” Psalm 91:16 “With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” 1 Timothy 5:1-2 “Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father… Treat older women as you would your mother.” Job 12:12 “Wisdom belongs to the aged and understanding to the old.” Philippians 1:6 “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Life Application

The Older I Get is more than the title of a popular Alan Jackson song. It is a truth that many Christians discover through experience. As the years pass, we begin to see life differently. Priorities change. Perspective grows. Most importantly, we recognize God’s faithfulness in ways we could never appreciate when we were younger. The song reminds us that true wealth is not found in bank accounts, possessions, or accomplishments. Instead, it is found in the people we love and the relationships we cherish. Alan Jackson observes that “it’s the people you love, not the money and stuff that makes you rich.” That message echoes the wisdom of Hebrews 13:5, which teaches us to be content because God’s presence is our greatest treasure. Furthermore, age gives us the opportunity to look back and see how often God has carried us through difficult seasons. We remember times when finances were uncertain, health challenges appeared, or doors unexpectedly closed.

God Remains Faithful

Yet God remained faithful. Isaiah 46:4 contains a remarkable promise. The Lord declares that He will sustain, carry, and rescue His people even into old age. Many people fear aging because it often brings physical limitations. However, Scripture presents another perspective. Job tells us that wisdom belongs to the aged. Every year spent walking with Christ teaches lessons that cannot be learned any other way. Therefore, older believers possess valuable insights that can encourage younger generations. The older we get, the more we appreciate loyal friends and faithful family members. We may have fewer friends than we once did, yet we often discover deeper relationships. Quality becomes more important than quantity. Likewise, we become increasingly grateful for children, grandchildren, church families, and lifelong companions who share life’s journey with us.

God Is Not Finished

Most importantly, God is not finished with us. Philippians 1:6 reminds believers that the Lord continues His work until Christ returns. Retirement does not retire us from God’s kingdom. Every season presents new opportunities to pray, mentor, encourage, serve, and share the love of Christ. Therefore, let us embrace each year with gratitude. The older we get, the more reasons we have to praise the God who has sustained us in the past, walks with us today, and promises to carry us safely home.
