Introduction

Nice Guys Do Not Finish Last. The world may say only cheaters win, but God promises that those who live faithfully will be crowned. This devotion reminds us that living by His standard brings eternal reward.

Life Application

Leo Durocher, the fiery manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, famously said, “Nice guys finish last.” The implication was clear: to win, you must bend rules or harden your heart. Yet Paul writes in 2 Timothy 2:5, “An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.” God’s Word flips Durocher’s logic. According to Scripture, Nice Guys Do Not Finish Last—they are crowned with eternal victory.

Bobby Jones, one of golf’s greats, once assessed himself a penalty no one else had seen. His honesty cost him the tournament, but it preserved his character. That’s proof that good guys are crowned champions. In God’s eyes, integrity wins even when earthly trophies slip away.

Modern golf offers more examples. Tommy Fleetwood, known as “Fairway Jesus” for his humility, persevered through twelve years of close calls before finally winning the Tour Championship in 2025. His triumph was celebrated because of the perseverance that defined his journey. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one, puts it simply: “The thrill of winning a golf tournament lasts a few days, but my faith and relationship with my wife and children remains forever.” Their lives show that Nice Guys Do Not Finish Last; they finish with character and faith intact, proving that faithful men finish first.

Paul’s message is clear: “a champion keeps the rules.” Our culture may reward shortcuts, but heaven crowns the faithful. Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” If our hearts are set on Christ, our actions will follow. Instead of chasing fleeting trophies, we prepare for an eternal crown crafted by the Lord Himself. So when you hear the old saying that “nice guys finish last,” remember it is a myth. In God’s kingdom, the faithful men finish first, and their crown never fades.
