Living ready for the return of Jesus

Are You Ready? Living Prepared for Christ’s Return

Living ready for the return of Jesus
Are You Ready?

Introduction

Learn how to be ready for Jesus’ return with faithfulness and a life focused on eternity while engaging fully in the present.  “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44).   Most of us know what it feels like to rush at the last minute. We put off preparing for an important appointment, a trip, or a deadline, assuming there will be more time later. Sometimes that assumption proves costly. Jesus uses that very human tendency to teach a sobering and hope-filled truth: His return will be the greatest event in human history, and it will arrive without advance notice.

When Jesus said, “Be ready,” He was not trying to frighten His followers but to focus them. Readiness, in Scripture, is not about panic or prediction—it is about faithfulness. It is a way of living that keeps eternity in view while fully engaging in today.

“God is looking for people through whom He can do the impossible. What a pity that we plan only the things we can do by ourselves.” — A.W. Tozer

Daily Reflection

Jesus’ return will not be an ordinary event. It will eclipse every headline, achievement, and milestone the world has ever known. And yet, Jesus repeatedly warned that many would be caught unprepared—not because they were wicked in obvious ways, but because they were distracted, careless, or spiritually asleep.

So how do we get ready?

Jesus never said readiness meant withdrawing from life or living in constant fear. Instead, He taught us to live today as though it matters eternally. Readiness is shaped in ordinary moments. It is formed in what we might call the “little things,” which God knows are actually the big things.

Readiness looks like kindness when it would be easier to be sharp. It looks like gentleness in a harsh world. It looks like a sincere smile, a warm word, or telling someone, “It’s good to see you,” and meaning it. These are not small acts; they are reflections of a heart that belongs to Christ.

Living Ready

Living ready also means refusing the illusion of perfection. None of us will finish today flawless. Jesus does not ask for perfection; He asks for faithfulness. A heart turned toward Him, a life surrendered daily, and a spirit willing to repent and obey—this is readiness.

To be ready is to live with open hands. We hold our plans loosely,  forgive quickly, love deeply.  It is making peace where possible. We do not delay obedience, assuming there will be a more convenient time tomorrow.

If today were your last day, how would you live it differently? That question is not meant to burden you, but to free you. When eternity is certain, today becomes sacred.

Johnny wisely reminds us with Scripture: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). Readiness begins in the heart long before it shows up in actions. What fills your thoughts will shape your life.

Life Application

  • Ask God each morning to help you live ready—faithful, humble, and attentive.
  • Practice intentional kindness today, especially where it costs you something.
  • Do not postpone obedience. Act on what God has already shown you.
  • End the day with honest reflection and gratitude, leaving tomorrow in God’s hands.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to live ready—not in fear, but in faith. Shape my heart, guide my steps, and teach me to be faithful in the small things. May my life reflect Your love until the day I see You face to face. Amen.
