Reflections on Apologetics #1 — Reasoned Faith: It makes Sense

Jesus with an Open Bible beneath a star-filled sky representing faith and reason together
Gospel Truth

Introduction

Discover how Christianity offers a reasoned faith grounded in truth, morality, creation, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Apologetics – a reasoned defense of the Christian faith, including defending the gospel..  There are four main kinds of apologetics.  I plan to “wander around and wonder “ about each of them for the next  four weeks.  I will share my reflections  as I wander and wonder.   “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord…” — Isaiah 1:18  “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” — Psalm 19:1

Many people assume faith and reason cannot coexist. Some believe Christianity asks us to abandon logic and embrace blind belief. Yet Scripture paints an entirely different picture. God consistently invites people to think, reflect, question, and seek truth. Christianity is not a faith built upon wishful thinking. Instead, it rests upon historical evidence, observable creation, moral truth, and ultimately the person of Jesus Christ.

As we begin this four-week journey of wandering and wondering through apologetics, we discover something refreshing: faith actually makes sense. The Christian worldview answers the deepest questions of life with clarity, coherence, and hope.

Apologetics is not about winning arguments. Rather, it is about lovingly explaining why we believe what we believe and why the Gospel remains intellectually credible and spiritually life-changing.

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen—not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” — C.S. Lewis

Reasoned Faith: It Actually Makes Sense

We hear it all the time:

“Faith is fine… but it’s not rational.”
“Science explains everything now.”
“Religion is just something weak people lean on.”

However, is that really true?

God never asked us to check our brains at the door. In fact, He invites the opposite. Isaiah records God saying, “Come now, let us reason together.” Christianity welcomes thoughtful reflection because truth withstands examination.

Start with the world around us. Everything we see had a beginning. The chair you are sitting on, the home you live in, and the device you hold did not simply appear out of nowhere. Someone designed them and brought them into existence.

The universe itself is no different.

Modern science now agrees that time, space, and matter had a beginning. Therefore, the logical question becomes: what caused it?

Nothing cannot create something. That truth remains unavoidable. Consequently, the cause of the universe must exist outside time, outside matter, and beyond space itself.

Not merely a force.
Not simply energy.
But a Creator.

Then we notice something even more astonishing. The universe is not chaotic. It is finely tuned with breathtaking precision. The laws of physics operate with incredible balance. If gravity changed even slightly, life could not exist. If countless other constants shifted by the smallest fraction, stars, planets, and human life would never form.

This level of precision points toward design rather than accident.

Additionally, every human heart recognizes moral truth. Deep within us, we know some things are truly wrong. Abuse, cruelty, injustice, and evil are not merely inconvenient opinions. We instinctively understand they violate something real.

Yet if morality is only human preference, then right and wrong become meaningless. Without God, morality reduces to personal opinion or cultural trends. However, humanity consistently lives as though objective moral truth exists.

Why?

Because a moral law points toward a moral Lawgiver.

Then all roads lead to Jesus.

Jesus did not merely teach kindness or compassion. He made extraordinary claims, forgave sins, accepted worship, and declared that He and the Father were one. Those are not the statements of a mere teacher.

Therefore, we must wrestle honestly with His identity.

Was He deceived?
Was He dishonest?
Or was He truly God in the flesh?

The resurrection forces that question even further. The tomb was empty. Fearful followers suddenly became bold proclaimers of the Gospel. Men and women who once hid in fear willingly suffered persecution and death because they believed they had seen the risen Christ.

People may die for something they mistakenly believe is true. However, people do not willingly die for something they know is false.

Something happened.

History does not fully argue against Christianity. In many ways, it leans toward it.

Faith is not blind emotion disconnected from reality. Instead, biblical faith involves trust built upon evidence, experience, reason, and revelation. Christianity does not eliminate mystery, but it offers answers that align beautifully with the world we actually experience.

Why are we here?

Why does love matter?

Why does evil grieve us?

Why does hope keep rising inside the human soul?

Christianity makes sense of all of it.

Life Application

God is not threatened by your questions. In fact, sincere questions often become pathways toward deeper faith. Therefore, do not fear honest investigation. Read Scripture thoughtfully. Study creation carefully. Examine the claims of Christ seriously.

The more we pursue truth with humility, the more clearly we often see the fingerprints of God.

This week, spend time reflecting on where you see evidence of God’s design, goodness, and truth in your everyday life. Perhaps you will notice His order in creation, His moral law within your conscience, or His presence through answered prayer and transformed lives.

Faith grows stronger when we realize Christianity is not merely emotionally comforting. It is intellectually compelling as well.

Closing Reflection

Faith is not a leap into darkness. Rather, it is a confident step toward the light. Christianity invites us to think deeply, love truth fully, and trust Christ completely.

You do not need to ignore your questions to believe.
You simply need to follow them far enough.

Because when pursued honestly, truth does not lead away from God.
It leads straight to Him.

Reflections are shared as a glimpse of Christ in my life, in hope that they might further kindle glimpses of Christ in yours.

Have a great week and keep your spirits high!

May God bless you. Amen.

Hugs,
Bill
