Have You Been to the Cross? Devotion – Calvary and Redemption

Cross at Calvary silhouetted against a dramatic sky
Calvary Reflection

Introduction

Reflect on the Cross devotional to understand its personal significance and the intentional love of Jesus for all.  Have you ever paused long enough to truly consider what happened at the Cross? Not just as a historical event, but as a deeply personal moment—one that involved you and me. Scripture tells us:  “When they came to the place that is called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on His right and one on His left.” (Luke 23:33)

At Calvary, Jesus willingly took on the weight of all sin—your sin, my sin, the sin of the world. This was not accidental. It was intentional, sacrificial, and full of love.

Reflection

“Have you been to the Cross?” is more than a question—it is an invitation.

Jesus Christ, who knew no sin, allowed Himself to be nailed to that rugged Cross. He bore the punishment that we deserved. Every failure, every hidden thought, every act of rebellion was placed upon Him. The Cross was not just a place of suffering; it was the place where justice and mercy met.

Sometimes we become so familiar with the story that we lose the wonder of it. But when we truly “go to the Cross” in our hearts, something changes. We begin to feel the weight of our sin—and even more, the overwhelming depth of God’s love.

The old spiritual asks, “Were you there when they crucified my Lord?” It isn’t asking if we were physically present, but spiritually aware. Can we place ourselves there, recognizing that it was our sin that held Him there?

And yet, it doesn’t end in sorrow. The Cross is not the final chapter—it is the turning point. When we grasp the gravity of Calvary, the resurrection becomes more than a celebration; it becomes a victory that we personally understand and embrace.

To visit the Cross daily is to remain humble, grateful, and transformed. It reminds us that we are forgiven, redeemed, and deeply loved.

“The Son of God loved me and gave Himself for me.” — Charles Spurgeon
