Introduction

Explore Jesus as fully God and fully man—Savior from sin and risen Lord—through Old & New Testament verses… and worship with “In Christ Alone.” I am privileged to participate in a men’s Bible Study Group Associated with the Highland Park Presbyterian Church of Dallas, Texas.  I participate by zoom call with 25-30 men who dial in from around the country and a few from outside the United States.  This past Tuesday we discussed the misappropriation of Jesus.  That discussion prompted today’s reflection.

In our culture today, Jesus is often reshaped to fit our preferences—a feel-good coach, a prosperity guide, a political ally, or a distant spiritual icon—much like how first-century Jews expected a conquering king to overthrow Rome rather than a suffering servant who would conquer sin. These misunderstandings remind us: without humble, Scripture-guided hearts, we too can miss who He really is.  The Bible reveals the astonishing truth: Jesus is fully God and fully man in one person, the only one qualified to save us from sin and rise victorious.

Consider these Old Testament prophecies and fulfillments:

  • Isaiah 7:14 – “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” God Himself enters humanity through a human birth, “God with us.”

  • Isaiah 9:6   (Prophecy 500+ years before Christ) – “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” A child is born, yet called “Mighty God,” uniting humanity and deity.

  • Isaiah 53:5 – “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” The suffering Servant bears our sin in His human body, securing our salvation.

In the New Testament, this mystery unfolds:

  • John 1:14 – “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” The eternal God takes on flesh, living among us.

  • Colossians 2:9 – “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” All of God in a human body—perfect union of natures.
  • Romans 1:3-4 – “…concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power... by his resurrection from the dead.” Fully human yet fully divine, proven by His resurrection as risen Lord71rwYVd5YGL.jpg

Jesus’ dual nature makes His saving work possible: only God can atone infinitely for sin; only a sinless man can represent humanity. His resurrection proves He is Lord over death, offering us eternal life.

Reflection:

How has culture (or even church traditions) shaped your view of Jesus? What steps—like deeper Scripture study during Lent—can help you see Him more clearly as the incarnate God, crucified Savior, and risen Lord?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for becoming fully man while remaining fully God. Thank You for bearing my sin on the cross and rising victorious. Help me know You truly, submit to You fully, and share Your gospel boldly while reflecting the true You to others in how I live my life.   Amen.
