We Are Spiritual Beings Having a Human Experience

Peaceful valley reflecting the peace of Christ and eternal spiritual life
Peace of Christ in the Valley

Introduction

We are spiritual beings having a human experience—discover peace, purpose, and eternal hope through Christ.   I love this quote .  Heard it many years ago and it really stayed with me.  I use it in my signature line for all of my emails.  “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” These well-known words from Pierre Teilhard de Chardin resonate deeply because they echo a far older biblical truth. Scripture consistently reminds us that while we live in physical bodies, our truest identity is spiritual and eternal.

As the years pass, this truth grows clearer. After seventy-four years of lived experience, faith is no longer abstract. It has been tested in valleys, refined through hardship, and confirmed through God’s faithfulness. Therefore, what remains steady is not circumstance, but Christ’s presence.

“You are not your body; you are a soul. You have a body.” — C.S. Lewis

Scripture Focus

“You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.”
— Romans 8:9–10

Reflection

The Apostle Paul draws a clear and comforting distinction. Our bodies are real, valuable, and purposeful. However, they are temporary. In contrast, the Spirit of Christ within us is eternal and life-giving.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin likely drew inspiration from passages such as this. His statement does not contradict Scripture. Instead, it reflects it. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible affirms that we are created for eternity and sustained by God’s Spirit.

When we understand that we are spiritual beings having a human experience, our perspective changes. Aging becomes refinement rather than loss. Suffering becomes a passage rather than a prison. As a result, fear loosens its grip.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me… Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
— Psalm 23:4, 6

David does not deny the valley. Instead, he acknowledges it honestly while declaring a greater truth: God is present. Therefore, peace is not found in the absence of hardship, but in the presence of Christ.

That is the peace of Christ—steady, sustaining, and eternal.
