I’ve Got a Fire: Living in the Power of the Spirit

Warm glowing fire representing the Holy Spirit, faith, spiritual renewal, and hope in Christ
Fire of the Holy Spirit

I’VE GOT A FIRE

Discover how I’ve got a fire within through the Holy Spirit, empowering you in every circumstance you face. There is something different about a life that has been touched by the Holy Spirit. There is a fire within that circumstances cannot easily extinguish. When you know Jesus, you are not walking through life alone. God has given you His Spirit to live within you, teach you, strengthen you, and remind you of His faithfulness.  You may have difficult days. You may become weary. However, the fire God places within His children does not depend upon perfect circumstances. It depends upon a faithful God.

OPENING WORSHIP

Breathe on Me, Breath of God

This beautiful hymn is a fitting prayer for today. Before we talk about spiritual fire, we need to remember that the Holy Spirit is the One who breathes new life into our hearts and draws us closer to Christ.

SCRIPTURE FOCUS

Hebrews 12:29 (KJV)

“For our God is a consuming fire.”

John 14:17 (KJV)

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

Romans 8:9 (KJV)

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

John 14:26 (KJV)

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

Romans 5:5 (KJV)

“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

Acts 1:8 (KJV)

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

These verses point us toward a powerful truth: the Christian life is not meant to be lived in our own strength. God Himself has given His Holy Spirit to dwell within His people.

LIFE APPLICATION

I’ve Got a Fire Because God Is With Me

When you say, “I’ve got a fire,” the fire is not something you created by yourself. It points to the work of God within you.

The Holy Spirit brings life where there was spiritual weariness;  brings truth when confusion surrounds you;  brings comfort when your heart is hurting;  gives strength when you feel too weak to keep going.

Jesus did not promise His followers an easy life. He promised His presence.

That makes all the difference.

Sometimes you may wake up excited about your faith. Other mornings may feel completely different. You may pray with confidence one day and struggle to find the words the next. Therefore, do not measure God’s presence by your emotions.

God is still faithful when you feel strong.

He is still faithful when you feel weak…still faithful when your circumstances change.

Keep the Fire Burning

A fire must be tended. In the same way, we should not neglect our relationship with Christ.

Spend time in God’s Word. Pray. Worship. Give thanks. Serve others. Forgive quickly. Encourage someone who is discouraged. Tell someone what Jesus has done for you.

These things do not earn God’s love. Instead, they help us respond to the love He has already given us.

The Holy Spirit also reminds us of what Jesus has said. When fear tells you that you are alone, remember that Christ has not abandoned you. If discouragement says your situation is hopeless, remember that God is still working. If temptation whispers that you cannot change, remember that the Spirit of God dwells within His people.

You do not have to manufacture spiritual strength.

You can depend upon Christ.

Remember How Good God Has Been

One of the greatest ways to keep your spiritual fire alive is to remember God’s faithfulness.

Think about the prayers He has answered.

Remember the doors He opened, the times He carried you when you could not carry yourself, the people He placed in your life at exactly the right moment., the forgiveness you received through Jesus Christ.

Then thank Him.

Gratitude turns our attention away from everything that is wrong and reminds us of the One who remains faithful.

Your circumstances may change, but God’s character does not.

Emotions may rise and fall, but God’s promises remain.

You may become exhausted, but God’s strength never runs out.

The Fire Is Meant to Be Shared

Acts 1:8 reminds us that the Holy Spirit gives power so that believers can be witnesses for Jesus.

The fire within us is not meant to remain hidden.

Your testimony may encourage someone who is ready to give u; kindness may show someone what God’s love looks like; willingness to pray may bring hope to someone who feels forgotten.

You do not have to be a preacher to be a witness.

You simply need to be willing to let Jesus shine through your life.

Perhaps today you feel spiritually strong. Thank God for it.

Perhaps you feel tired and discouraged. Bring that weariness to Jesus.

Perhaps your fire seems small. Do not despise small beginnings. Turn toward Christ again. Open His Word. Pray again. Worship again. Trust again.

The fire belongs to Him.

And the God who began His work in you is faithful.

As A. W. Tozer wrote, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” Our view of God shapes our worship, our confidence, and our daily walk with Him.

So remember who God is.

He is holy,  faithful, present,  and good.

He is our strength.

And through Jesus Christ, His Holy Spirit dwells within His people.

You may face another difficult day. However, you do not face it alone.

Keep your eyes on Jesus, trusting His promises,  remembering His goodness, and keeping the fire burning.

The Knowledge of the Holy

BRIEF PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit.

Thank You for being with us when we are strong and when we are weak. Thank You for reminding us of Your truth when fear and discouragement try to overwhelm us.

Lord Jesus, help us keep our eyes on You. Stir our hearts when we become spiritually tired. Renew our joy. Strengthen our faith. Help us remember how good You have been.

Teach us to live in the power of Your Spirit rather than relying upon our own strength.

Use our lives as witnesses for Christ. Let Your love shine through our words, our actions, our families, our workplaces, and our friendships.

Keep the fire of faith alive within us, and help us share the hope You have given us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
