Scripture Foundation

Matthew 7:9-11 (ESV)
“Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Life Application — Good Gifts of the Father

Jesus used a simple illustration that every parent understands. A loving father wants to provide for his children. When a child asks for bread, a caring father does not hand him a stone. When a child asks for food, he does not offer something harmful. Christ then directs our attention to a far greater truth. If imperfect earthly fathers know how to give good gifts, our perfect Heavenly Father gives even better gifts to those who seek Him.

Furthermore, Jesus connected this truth to daily dependence upon God. In the Lord’s Prayer, He taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” God knows every need before we ask. Therefore, we can approach Him with confidence, trusting His wisdom, timing, and love.

The focus key phrase, Good Gifts of the Father, shines throughout Scripture. David celebrated those gifts in Psalm 23. The Lord provides rest in green pastures. He leads beside still waters. He restores weary souls. He guides His children in righteous paths. Even in dark valleys, His presence comforts and protects.

Psalm 23 (KJV)
1. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Moreover, James reminds believers that every blessing originates with God. James 1:17 declares, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.” Consequently, gratitude should become a daily habit. We thank God for salvation, forgiveness, family, provision, strength, peace, and hope.

As we reflect on the day after Father’s Day, we honor faithful earthly fathers. However, our hearts ultimately turn toward our Heavenly Father. His love never fails. His resources never run dry. His promises never expire. Because of His goodness, our cups truly can run over. Therefore, let us lift holy hands in worship and thanksgiving to the Giver of all good gifts.
