I Am Loved: Held in God’s Unconditional Grace

Opening Worship: “Jesus Loves Me” — Whitney Houston
Before we open God’s Word, let’s quiet our hearts with a familiar childhood song sung in a way that reminds grown hearts of the same simple truth. Whitney Houston’s rendition of “Jesus Loves Me” strips away all the complicated theology we sometimes pile on top of the Gospel and leaves only what is true: Jesus loves you, and the Bible tells you so.
Scripture Focus
Long before you drew your first breath, God had already decided how He felt about you.
“Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love” (Ephesians 1:4, ESV)
His love was never a reaction to your goodness. It was the reason He sent His own Son.
“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10, ESV)
That same rich mercy reaches every reader today, exactly where you are.
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us.” (Ephesians 2:4, ESV)
Even the Apostle Paul, who once persecuted the church, found God’s grace overflowing toward him rather than withheld from him.
And the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 1:14, ESV)
John invites every believer to move from simply hearing about this love to actually resting in it.
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16, ESV)
And our ability to love anyone else always flows from the same source.
“We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19, ESV)

Life Application: Living Like Someone Who Is Loved
Most of us don’t struggle to believe God loves the world. We struggle to believe He loves us specifically, personally, and today. Ephesians 1:4 answers that struggle directly. God chose you before He made a single star, a single mountain, or a single ocean. Your value was never up for debate. It was settled in eternity, before you had done anything right or wrong.
Love That Doesn’t Wait for You to Earn It
First John 4:10 flips our usual assumption upside down. We tend to think love must be earned through effort. However, this verse says the opposite. God loved first. He sent Jesus not because we finally cleaned ourselves up, but because we couldn’t. Therefore, His love toward you was never a reward. It was a rescue.
Think about the last time you felt disqualified from God’s affection. Maybe it was a sharp word to your spouse, a habit you can’t seem to break, or a private thought you’d never say out loud. Ephesians 2:4 meets you right there. God is described as “rich in mercy,” not cautious with it. Mercy isn’t rationed out to those who deserve it least of a bad week. It’s poured out freely, because His love was never based on your performance in the first place.
Grace That Overflows Instead of Runs Out
Paul had every reason to assume God’s patience had limits. He had imprisoned Christians and approved of violence against the church. Yet in 1 Timothy 1:14, he describes grace that “overflowed” for him. If grace could overflow for a man like Paul, it can certainly overflow for you on your ordinary, imperfect, Tuesday-afternoon kind of day.
Moving from Knowing to Believing
First John 4:16 makes an important distinction. John doesn’t simply say we know about God’s love. He says we come to know and believe it. Knowledge can stay in your head. Belief moves into your heart and changes how you live. Consequently, when you actually believe you are loved, fear starts to lose its grip. Shame starts to lose its voice. You begin approaching God the way a secure child approaches a good father, rather than the way a nervous employee approaches a demanding boss.
Love That Multiplies
Finally, 1 John 4:19 reminds us that love isn’t meant to stop with us. We love others because He loved us first. The patience you extend to a difficult coworker, the forgiveness you offer a family member, and the compassion you show a stranger all trace back to the same source: a love you didn’t generate on your own. As a result, resting in God’s love isn’t selfish. It’s the very thing that equips you to love well.
So today, whatever you’re carrying, remember this: you are not loved because of what you’ve accomplished. You are loved because God decided, before time began, that you were worth loving through His Son.
A Word from a Trusted Voice
Charles H. Spurgeon once described the believer’s confidence not as confidence in their own faithfulness, but as confidence resting entirely in the unchanging love of God toward His children. His point echoes exactly what we’ve seen in Scripture today: our security was never meant to rest on our grip on God, but on His grip on us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me before I ever had a chance to earn it. Forgive me for the days I’ve tried to work my way into Your affection instead of simply resting in it. Help me believe, not just know, that Your love for me is settled and secure. Teach me to live today as someone who is truly loved, and let that love overflow into how I treat the people around me. I ask this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
