What A Friend We Have In Jesus – Redeemed Quartet

Scripture Focus
Proverbs 16:28 (ESV)
“A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.”
Relationships are precious gifts from God. However, they are easily damaged by gossip, deception, and careless words. Therefore, Scripture warns us to guard both our speech and our hearts.
Proverbs 17:17 (ESV)
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
True friendship does not disappear when hardship arrives. Instead, genuine friends remain faithful during life’s greatest challenges.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (ESV)
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
Followers of Christ are called to strengthen one another. Our words should bring hope instead of discouragement.
Job 6:14 (ESV)
“He who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty.”
Kindness reflects God’s own character. Consequently, withholding compassion reveals something missing in our own walk with Him.
Proverbs 27:9 (ESV)
“Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.”
Wise counsel from a trusted friend refreshes the soul just as fragrance refreshes the senses.
John 15:13 (ESV)
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friend.”
Jesus defined perfect friendship by His sacrifice on the cross. He did not merely speak about love—He demonstrated it.
Life Application
Most of us have experienced disappointment in friendship. Someone failed us. Someone broke a promise. Perhaps someone we trusted walked away when we needed them most. Those painful memories can make us cautious about trusting again.
Even the best human friends have limits. They cannot always remove our pain, heal our broken hearts, or change difficult circumstances. They may want to help, yet they simply do not possess the power.
Thomas Mac captures this truth beautifully in his song “Friend Who Can.” The lyrics admit our weaknesses. We cannot walk on water. We cannot erase every mistake. We cannot rescue ourselves from every storm. Nevertheless, the chorus reminds us of a wonderful truth: “I got a Friend who can.”
That Friend is Jesus Christ.
Jesus never claimed that life would be easy. Instead, He promised His presence. Throughout Scripture, we repeatedly see Him standing beside frightened disciples, grieving sisters, desperate fathers, lonely widows, and broken sinners. Consequently, wherever Jesus appeared, hope followed.
When Martha mourned her brother Lazarus, Jesus came. When Peter began sinking beneath the waves, Jesus reached out His hand. Likewise, when the woman caught in adultery expected condemnation, Jesus offered forgiveness and a new beginning.
Jesus Character Never Changes
Those stories are not merely ancient history. They reveal the unchanging character of our Savior.
Today, He still comforts anxious hearts. He still forgives repentant sinners. Moreover, He still provides strength for weary believers who feel they have reached the end of themselves.
Friendship with Jesus is unlike any earthly relationship because it never depends upon our performance. Human friendships sometimes weaken when disappointment enters the picture. Christ’s love remains constant because it rests upon His perfect grace rather than our imperfect behavior.
His friendship also transforms the way we treat others. Since He encourages us, we should encourage one another. Because He forgives us, we should forgive others. Furthermore, since He remains faithful through every trial, we should become faithful friends ourselves.
The world desperately needs believers who reflect the friendship of Christ. Many people feel isolated despite being surrounded by others. Therefore, a kind word, an encouraging note, a sincere prayer, or a listening ear may become God’s instrument of hope for someone today.
Most importantly, remember that Jesus is the Friend who can do what no one else can. He can forgive every sin, restore broken lives, give peace in troubled times and replace fear with faith and despair with hope.
When everyone else reaches the limits of human ability, Jesus is only beginning.
He truly is the Friend who can.
Brief Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus, the Friend who never leaves nor forsakes us. Thank You that when our strength fails, Your power remains perfect. Help us trust You with every burden we carry and every trial we face. Teach us to become faithful friends who encourage, comfort, forgive, and speak words that build others up. May our lives reflect the love that Christ demonstrated when He laid down His life for us. Help us point others to the only Friend who can save, heal, restore, and give eternal hope.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
