Encouragement is Essential to Spiritual Growth
“See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”
Hebrews 3:13
Let Us Pray
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of encouragement. Strengthen our hearts so that we can lift others up in Your name. May we speak life, hope, and truth to those in need today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Introduction
Encouragement is essential to the Christian life. Whether we’re facing personal struggles or spiritual dryness, the timely words of a fellow believer can renew our hope. Everyone needs encouragement, and God has built that into the very design of His church. From Paul’s letters to Jesus’ example, we are called to lift each other daily.
Encouragement Strengthens the Spirit
We often romanticize Bible times, but life back then was far from easy. People walked for miles, cooked over open flames, and washed clothes in rivers. Even so, their emotional and spiritual needs mirrored our own. Life was hard. Pressures mounted. Depression and discouragement followed.
But Paul—the original life coach—taught believers how to stay encouraged. He offered a three-fold foundation for victorious Christian living:
- “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20)
- “Encourage one another and build one another up.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
That sums up our identity: We are not the same person we were before salvation. Christ now lives in us. Yet, even with that truth, we still need people. God uses friends and fellow believers to lift us when we fall. Just as people can drag you down, others can raise you up.
Paul lived like Jesus—giving his life so others could find theirs. And Jesus gave everything so that we could not only survive but thrive. As John 10:10 reminds us, “I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”
This morning, encourage someone. Speak truth. Send a message. Offer a prayer. Because today—while it is still called “Today”—you may be the reason someone’s heart stays soft toward God.
