Opening Worship Song
Alan Jackson’s warm, country gospel rendition of this beloved hymn reminds us where our confidence truly rests. When doubts begin to rise, we can plant our feet firmly on the unchanging promises of God.
Standing on the Promises – Alan Jackson
Scripture Focus
Doubt is not a new problem. In fact, the enemy’s very first words to humanity were a question designed to make Eve doubt God:
“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God actually say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden”?'”
— Genesis 3:1 (ESV)
Against that age-old strategy, the writer of Hebrews gives us a clear and loving charge:
“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.
— Hebrews 10:35-36 (ESV)
Our confidence rests on the greatest promise ever spoken:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
— John 3:16 (ESV)
Jesus Himself tells us exactly what that promised reward looks like:
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
— John 14:3-4 (ESV)
Finally, God equips us for the battle with a shield:
“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.”
— Ephesians 6:16 (ESV)
So how do these verses fit together in your life today? Let’s look a little closer.
Life Application: Do Not Lose Faith When Doubt Comes Knocking
The Enemy’s Oldest Strategy
Have you ever noticed how doubt rarely arrives with a loud announcement? Instead, it slips in quietly with a simple question. That is exactly how Satan approached Eve in the garden.
He did not deny God outright. Rather, he asked, “Did God actually say…?” That one small question planted a seed of doubt. Sadly, the seed grew into disobedience.
Satan’s methods have not changed much since then. Even today, his most effective strategy is to make us doubt God’s goodness, God’s Word, and God’s promises. Perhaps he whispers that your prayers go unheard. Maybe he suggests your past is too messy for grace. Sometimes he simply says that following Jesus is not worth the effort.
Hold On to Your Confidence
That is why the writer of Hebrews pleads with us not to throw away our confidence. Notice the word “throw.” The enemy rarely steals our confidence outright. Instead, he tempts us to toss it aside when life gets hard.
However, our confidence does not rest on our feelings. It rests on Jesus Christ and what He has already done for us.
John 3:16 reminds us that God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son. Therefore, whoever believes in Him has eternal life. That promise does not change with your mood, your circumstances, or the morning headlines. Because God said it, you can stand on it.
Endurance for an Ongoing Battle
Of course, the struggle against doubt is not a one-time event. As a result, Hebrews tells us we need endurance. The enemy’s tricks are ongoing, so our faithfulness must be ongoing as well.
Think of endurance like a long road trip. You will hit traffic, detours, and bad weather along the way. Still, you keep driving because you know the destination is real.
Likewise, Jesus promised He is preparing a place for us. Moreover, He promised He will come again to take us home. Every mile of faithfulness brings us closer to Him.
Meanwhile, God has not left us defenseless. Paul tells us to take up the shield of faith, which puts out the flaming darts of the evil one. Each morning, you can choose to pick up that shield again.
Five Ways to Stay on Course
In summary, the writer of Hebrews is lovingly pleading with us to:
- Stick with what you believe. Anchor your heart in the truth of God’s Word.
- Be prepared for an ongoing battle. Expect doubt to return, and answer it with Scripture.
- Determine God’s will for your life. Seek Him daily through prayer and His Word.
- Stay on course. Keep walking with Jesus even when the road feels long.
- Collect your promised reward. Look forward with joy to eternity with Jesus.
A Reward Worth Waiting For
So, my friend, do not lose faith. The reward God promises is not a trophy on a shelf. Instead, it is eternity in the presence of Jesus Himself.
Whatever doubt you face today, bring it straight to Him. He is faithful. He keeps every promise. And most importantly, He will never let go of those who belong to Him.
A Word of Encouragement
C. S. Lewis described faith in a way that speaks directly to the battle against doubt:
“Faith, in the sense in which I am here using the word, is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.”
— C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Our moods will rise and fall. Nevertheless, God’s promises stay exactly where He placed them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so much that You gave Your only Son. Thank You for every promise You have spoken and kept. When doubt whispers in our ears, help us remember what You have said. Give us endurance for the battle and wisdom to know Your will. Help us take up the shield of faith each morning. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and on the home He is preparing for us. We trust You to hold us fast. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Worship Song
This beautiful hymn, sung by Keith and Kristyn Getty, carries today’s message home. It reminds us that our hope does not depend on how tightly we cling to Christ. Rather, it depends on how securely He holds on to us, even when our own faith feels weak.
