What Bread Are You Eating? – Jesus the Bread of Life Devotion

Bread and Bible symbolizing Jesus as the Bread of Life
Bread of Life

Introduction

Find fulfillment in the Bread of Life devotion, where Jesus reveals Himself as the true source of spiritual sustenance.  Every day we eat food to sustain our physical bodies. Bread, water, and nourishment are necessary for life. Yet Jesus taught that there is another hunger far deeper than the hunger of the body—the hunger of the soul. Many people spend their lives trying to fill that inner emptiness with success, comfort, possessions, or even religion, yet they remain spiritually hungry.

When Jesus fed the five thousand, the crowd was amazed. They saw a miracle and wanted more. In fact, they followed Him, hoping He would continue providing physical food. But Jesus used that moment to reveal a much greater truth: He Himself is the only food that can truly satisfy the human soul.

Charles Spurgeon once wrote, “A soul satisfied with Jesus has found the bread of heaven and hungers no more.”

Spurgeon understood the truth Jesus was teaching: when Christ fills the heart, the restless searching of the soul finally finds peace.

Scripture Reflection

After the miracle of feeding the multitude, the crowd asked Jesus for bread continually:

“Sir, give us this bread always.” (John 6:34)

They were thinking about their stomachs. Jesus, however, was speaking about their souls. He answered them with one of the most powerful declarations in all of Scripture:

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

Jesus reminded them of their ancestors in the wilderness. God had miraculously provided manna from heaven for Israel during their journey through the desert. Yet even that supernatural food could only sustain physical life temporarily.

Jesus said:

“I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.” (John 6:48–50)

The manna preserved physical life for a season, but it could not defeat death. Jesus, however, offers something far greater—eternal life.

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.” (John 6:51)

To “eat” this bread means to receive Christ by faith, to trust Him completely, and to allow His life to fill our hearts and guide our lives.

What Bread Are You Eating?

Today many people are surrounded by abundance. We live in a world of overflowing grocery stores, restaurants on every corner, and food from every culture imaginable. In many ways, we live in what could be called the “breadbasket of the world.”

Yet physical abundance does not guarantee spiritual nourishment.

A person can have every comfort imaginable and still feel empty inside. Wealth, entertainment, knowledge, and achievements may feed the mind or the body, but they cannot satisfy the soul.

Just as the Israelites depended daily on manna in the wilderness, we must depend daily on Christ. But unlike manna, which only sustained life temporarily, Jesus gives life that lasts forever.

When we come to Him through faith, prayer, Scripture, and obedience, He nourishes our hearts with truth, peace, and eternal hope.

This is why time with Christ each day is so essential. Our souls must be fed just as surely as our bodies.

Proverbs reminds us:

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)

What we continually feed our hearts shapes who we become. If we consume only the things of the world, our souls grow weak and empty. But when we feed daily on the Word of God and the presence of Christ, our inner life grows strong and full of peace.

Life Application

Ask yourself a simple but powerful question today:

What bread am I eating?

Are you filling your life primarily with the temporary things of this world? Or are you feeding your soul daily with the living bread—Jesus Christ?

Spending time in Scripture, prayer, worship, and reflection allows Christ to nourish our hearts. The more we receive His truth, the more our spiritual hunger is satisfied.

Jesus alone is the bread that truly satisfies. When we come to Him, we discover that the deepest hunger of our soul has already been met through His love and sacrifice.
