My Brother-In Law, Dr. Joe Logan is a saintly man. He is wisdom personified. A year or so ago he said the following and I jotted it down:
“Christ did not save us because we are worthy. We are worthy because Christ saved us.”
Others have had similar thoughts though not quite so eloquent::
- Charles Haddon Spurgeon expressed a similar idea: “Jesus didn’t die for our righteousness but died for our sins. He didn’t come to save us because we were worth saving, but because we were utterly worthless, ruined, and undone.”
- John Piper’s message emphasizes: “Christ died for us, not because we are worthy, but because we are unworthy, and there was no other way for us to be made worthy.”
The Bible reflects the sentiment in several places too:
- “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”(Romans 5:8)
- “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
- “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.” (Titus 3:5)
