Opening Worship Song
This stirring arrangement of a beloved hymn reminds us that the love of Jesus is deeper than any ocean and wider than any sky. Let it prepare your heart to hear what God says about love today.
Oh, The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus (Epic Version)
Scripture Focus
Everything begins with who God is. John gives us the foundation in just a few words:
“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
— 1 John 4:8 (ESV)
Paul then shows us why love outlasts everything else:
“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:13 (ESV)
Next, John reveals what God’s love does to our fears:
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
— 1 John 4:18 (ESV)
Isaiah describes the renewed strength that comes to those who rest in the Lord:
But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
— Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
Paul also tells us to wear love as our outer garment:
“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”
— Colossians 3:14 (ESV)
He reminds us that love is the one debt we never finish paying:
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
— Romans 13:8 (ESV)
Finally, Paul gives us a simple rule for every part of life:
“Let all that you do be done in love.”
— 1 Corinthians 16:14 (ESV)
These verses fit together like threads in one beautiful cloth. So now, let’s look at how God’s love can change the way we live today.
Life Application: Living in the Power of God’s Love
Love Begins with God
John does not say that God has love. Instead, he says God is love. That changes everything.
Because love flows from who God is, His love for you never runs dry. It does not depend on your best day or your worst mistake. Most importantly, we see that love most clearly at the cross, where Jesus gave Himself for us.
Think about the people who have loved you well, such as a parent, a grandparent, or a faithful friend. Their love was a precious gift. Even so, it was only a small reflection of the love God has for you. His love never grows tired, distracted, or limited. It is perfect, and in Christ it is yours.
So before you try to love others better, pause and receive His love first. After all, you cannot give away what you have not received.
Love That Drives Out Fear
Many of us carry quiet fears. We worry about our health, our families, or our finances. Some of us even fear that God is waiting to punish us.
However, John tells us that perfect love casts out fear. In Christ, the punishment we deserved has already fallen on Him. As a result, you can come to your heavenly Father without dread.
Fear may still knock on the door. Nevertheless, you do not have to let it move in. When anxious thoughts rise, remember the power of God’s love. Then speak His truth back to your heart: “My Father loves me, and Jesus holds me.”
That is how weary people rise again. Just as Isaiah promised, those who wait on the Lord renew their strength. His love lifts us up on wings like eagles.
Love That Shapes Every Day
Paul calls love the greatest of the three. One day, faith will become sight. Likewise, hope will one day be fulfilled. Yet love will continue forever, because heaven is filled with the love of God.
That is why Paul tells us to put on love like a garment. Think of it as the coat you wear over everything else. It holds all your other virtues together.
Practically, love shows up in small moments. For example, it looks like patience with a slow driver. It also looks like a phone call to a lonely neighbor. Similarly, love means forgiving a family member who hurt you.
Paul even says love is the one debt we never finish paying. We keep giving it because Christ keeps giving it to us.
Let All You Do Be Done in Love
Paul’s simple rule covers your work, your words, your home, and your church. Therefore, ask yourself today, “Where does love need to show up in my life?”
Maybe it is a kind word. Perhaps it is a quiet act of service. Whatever it is, you do not do it alone. The power of God’s love lives in you through the Holy Spirit.
Remember, friend, Jesus loves you deeply. Because of Him, fear does not get the final word. Love does.
A Word of Encouragement
Few people understood the power of God’s love in a dark place better than Corrie ten Boom and her sister Betsie. While imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, Betsie spoke words that Corrie later shared with the world:
“There is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still.”
— Betsie ten Boom, as recorded by Corrie ten Boom in The Hiding Place
No matter how deep your fear or sorrow may be, the love of Jesus reaches deeper still.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are love. Thank You for loving me before I ever loved You, and for proving that love through Jesus at the cross.
Lord, You know the fears I carry. Please drive them out with Your perfect love. When I feel weak, renew my strength and lift me up like an eagle.
Clothe me in Your love today. Help me show patience, kindness, and forgiveness to the people around me. Give me wisdom to see where love is needed, and strength to act on it.
Let everything I do be done in love, so that others may see Jesus in me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
