Life Application
Looking Back to See His Hand
Most of us don’t recognize God’s presence in the middle of our hardest moments. Instead, we see it afterward, when the storm has passed and the fog has lifted. This is exactly the theme behind the popular song “There Was Jesus,” a Grammy-winning release from 2019 that captures a simple but powerful realization: looking back over a difficult season, believers often discover that Christ was present the entire time, even when they felt completely alone. On the mountain, in the valley, in the fire, and in the flood, He never stepped away.
Jeremiah 29:13 promises that those who seek God with their whole heart will find Him. Notice, however, that the verse doesn’t say seeking is easy. Sometimes we seek Him through tears. Sometimes we seek Him through confusion, through waiting, or through seasons that feel like silence. Yet God’s promise stands firm: those who seek Him wholeheartedly will find Him, even if the finding takes longer than we’d like.
Exodus 33:14 adds another layer to this truth. Moses was leading a stubborn, frightened people through an uncertain wilderness, and God met his anxiety with a simple assurance: “My presence will go with you.” Because that promise was given to Moses, it belongs to us as well. Your wilderness may look different, but the same presence that steadied Moses is available to steady you.
Trusting Him in the Moment
Here is the harder, more practical question: can you trust that presence before you can see it? Psalm 140:13 and Psalm 16:11 both describe dwelling in God’s presence as a source of joy, not just a future comfort. Therefore, faith isn’t only about looking backward and connecting the dots. It’s also about leaning forward, trusting that the God who was faithful yesterday is faithful right now, in whatever you’re facing this morning.
1 John 4:16 reminds us why this trust is reasonable: God is love, and those who abide in love abide in Him. Consequently, when life feels uncertain, you are not clinging to a vague hope. You are resting in the character of a God who has already proven, again and again, that He does not abandon His people. Finally, Psalm 100:2 calls us to respond with gladness rather than fear. Serving the Lord with joy becomes possible once we truly believe He is near.
So take a moment today. Think back over a season you once thought you walked alone. Look closely, and you will likely find Jesus was there all along, quietly at work, patiently present, faithfully near. He is just as present in what you’re facing right now.

A Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus, thank You for being present in every season of my life, even the ones where I couldn’t feel You near. Forgive me for the times I doubted Your nearness. Help me to seek You with my whole heart, to trust Your presence before I can see the outcome, and to serve You with gladness rather than fear. When I look back on this season one day, let me clearly see that You were there all along. I ask this in Your precious name. Amen.
