Chain Breaker: Finding Freedom Through Jesus Christ

Broken chains symbolizing freedom through Jesus Christ
Spiritual Liberation

Introduction

Every person carries chains of some kind. Some are visible, while others remain hidden deep within the heart. Chains of addiction, fear, shame, bitterness, anxiety, guilt, unforgiveness, or despair can quietly imprison the soul. Many people spend years trying to break free through willpower alone, only to discover the chains still remain. Yet the Gospel offers a glorious truth: Jesus Christ is still in the business of setting captives free.

Psalm 107:14 declares, “He brought them out of darkness…and broke away their chains.” God does not merely comfort us in bondage; He breaks bondage. Through Christ, prisoners become free men and women. Through His power, chains that seemed permanent can fall apart in an instant or gradually loosen through faithful surrender and grace.

Inspirational Reflection

Author and theologian Oswald Chambers once said:

“God does not give us overcoming life—He gives us life as we overcome.”

That statement reminds us that spiritual freedom often comes through daily dependence upon Christ. God’s power meets us in the middle of our struggle and carries us toward victory.

Scripture Focus

“He brought them out of darkness…and broke away their chains.”
— Psalm 107:14

“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
— John 8:36

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?”
— Isaiah 58:6 (NIV)

Devotional Message

The powerful song “Chain Breaker” by Zach Williams resonates deeply because it speaks to the reality of human brokenness and the hope found in Jesus Christ. Zach Williams himself experienced dark seasons before finding freedom in Christ, and that testimony gives authenticity to the song’s message. The lyrics point listeners toward the Savior who specializes in redemption.

The chains mentioned throughout Scripture are not always physical. Often they are spiritual and emotional strongholds that slowly rob people of peace and purpose. Addiction can chain a person. Fear can chain a person. Shame from past mistakes can chain a person. Even anger, pride, or hopelessness can become spiritual bondage.

Satan’s strategy has always been to enslave. Jesus’ mission has always been to liberate.

Second Corinthians 10:4 reminds believers:

“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”

Notice the phrase “divine power.” Freedom is not ultimately accomplished through human strength alone. Real deliverance comes through surrender to Christ and reliance upon the Holy Spirit. God’s power destroys strongholds that seem impossible to overcome.

Many believers become discouraged because they assume freedom should happen instantly in every area of life. Sometimes God works immediately, while other times He works progressively. Either way, freedom begins the moment we stop trusting ourselves and begin trusting Christ completely.

Proverbs 3:5 gives wise counsel:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

People often stay trapped because they continue leaning on their own understanding, their own methods, or their own strength. Christ invites us to place the full weight of our lives into His hands.

Galatians 5:1 boldly declares:

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

What a beautiful promise! Jesus did not die merely to forgive sin but also to break its power. Believers are not called to live defeated lives chained to yesterday’s failures. Through Christ, there is hope for new beginnings, restored joy, renewed purpose, and transformed lives.

Perhaps today you feel trapped by something that has followed you for years. Maybe no one else even knows about it. Be encouraged: Jesus is still a chain breaker. No addiction is too powerful, shame too deep, or darkness too overwhelming for the light of Christ.

The same Savior who opened prison doors in Scripture still opens prison doors in human hearts today.

  • Bring that burden honestly before God in prayer rather than hiding it.
  • Trust Christ daily instead of depending solely upon willpower.
  • Surround yourself with believers who encourage accountability and hope.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the great Chain Breaker. You see every hidden burden, every fear, every addiction, and every stronghold. Thank You that Your power is greater than anything that holds us captive. Teach us to trust You fully and walk daily in the freedom You provide.
