Introduction
Discover the simplicity of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and rest in God’s finished work. Been wondering about salvation as I wandered this week. The older I get, the more I realize that the greatest question a person can ever ask is the same one asked long ago: “What must I do to be saved?” It is not a complicated theological puzzle. It is not a ladder we climb. It is not a score we try to beat. Salvation is a gift—simple, profound, and life-changing.
The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 10:9–13 that if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Scripture is clear: everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. No exclusions, special categories, or secret handshakes . Just grace through faith.

What Must I Do?
When the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, “What must I do to be saved?” the answer was direct and beautifully simple: “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:30–31).
The Bible presents one step to salvation—faith in Jesus Christ. That’s it. Not a lifetime of good deeds first, cleaning yourself up beforehand, or achieving moral perfection. Faith alone is it.
Romans 3:23 reminds us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death. But John 3:16 proclaims the good news that God so loved the world He gave His only Son. Romans 5:8 assures us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Ephesians 2:8–9 makes it unmistakable: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
One does not earn salvation. It is received.
Grace, Adoption, and Knowing
Jesus speaks in John 10 of being the Good Shepherd. He knows His sheep, and His sheep know His voice. There is a deep, personal, relational knowledge described there. It is not casual recognition. It is covenant love.
Think about the difference between knowing your own daughter and recognizing a waitress you see occasionally at a restaurant. One is intimate, protective, bonded by love. The other is polite acquaintance. When Jesus says in Matthew 7 that He “never knew” certain people, He is not speaking of awareness—He is speaking of relationship. Those who repent and believe are adopted children of God. God knows them as His children.
I am just an old sinner…saved by Grace. And by trying to live like Christ, I move toward sanctification—not to earn salvation, but because I already have it. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works prepared in advance for us to do. Works are the fruit, not the root.
Life Application
This week, rest in the simplicity of the gospel. If you have believed in Christ, stop striving to prove yourself worthy. You never were—and you never had to be. Jesus was worthy on your behalf.
If you have never called on His name, you can do so today. Right where you are. No ceremony required. Confess Him as Lord. Believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. Receive the gift.
And for those of us walking this road for decades, let us live gratefully. Let us pursue holiness not from fear, but from love. Let us remember daily: sinner saved by grace.

Closing Prayer
Father God, thank You for the simplicity and beauty of salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank You that it is by grace through faith and not by our works. Help us rest in Your finished work and walk daily in gratitude and obedience. You know us, love us, and have adopted us as Your children. Remind us of this great truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
