Introduction
Discover the profound ways God calls us, tracing His purpose through the early life of Jesus and divine prophecy. From the earliest pages of Scripture, God reveals Himself as a God who calls. He calls individuals, families, and nations according to His redemptive purposes. Sometimes His call comes through direct words, sometimes through angels, sometimes through dreams, and now—most faithfully and personally—through the Holy Spirit and the written Word. In today’s devotion, we trace God’s calling hand through prophecy and fulfillment, especially as seen in the early life of Jesus. What appears at first to be a series of relocations—Egypt, Israel, Nazareth—is in fact the careful unfolding of divine intention. God is never improvising; He is always fulfilling what He has spoken.
Quotation
“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” — C.S. Lewis
Scripture Reading
Hosea 11:1 (ESV): “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.”
Matthew 2:13 (ESV): “Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’”
Matthew 2:20 (ESV): “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.”
Matthew 2:23 (ESV): “And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.”
2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV): “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
Devotional Reflection
Hosea’s declaration, “Out of Egypt I called my son,” originally referred to Israel’s exodus from bondage. Yet under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Matthew reveals a deeper fulfillment: Jesus Himself embodies Israel’s story. Where Israel failed, Christ succeeds. Where Israel wandered, Christ obeys. God’s call out of Egypt is not merely geographic—it is redemptive.
God spoke to Hosea centuries before Jesus was born, declaring a truth that would only later be fully understood. In the New Testament, God spoke again—this time to Joseph—through angelic dreams. Joseph heard God’s call not once, but repeatedly: flee to Egypt, return to Israel, settle in Nazareth. Each step required obedience without full explanation. Joseph was not given a master plan, only daily direction. Yet his obedience ensured the fulfillment of prophecy and the protection of the Savior.
Nazareth itself seemed insignificant, even despised. “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” would later be asked. Yet God often chooses what the world overlooks to accomplish what the world cannot deny. By settling in Nazareth, Joseph unknowingly aligned his family with prophetic expectation. Jesus would be known as a Nazarene—not by accident, but by divine design.
God still calls His people today. While He no longer sends angels in dreams as a norm, He speaks clearly through Scripture and through the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit. His call may lead us into unfamiliar places, uncomfortable obedience, or seasons of waiting. Like Joseph, we are called to trust that God’s voice always aligns with God’s Word.
As we near the completion of this 31-day journey exploring identity and fulfilled prophecy, we are reminded that Scripture stands unified and trustworthy. For those who question the deity of Christ or the reliability of prophecy, Paul’s words remain firm: all Scripture is God-breathed. Jesus did not merely fulfill prophecy—He authenticated the Word itself.
Life Application
- Listen attentively for God’s voice through Scripture and prayer.
- Obey even when the full picture is unclear.
- Trust that God’s call always aligns with His promises.
- Remember that obedience today may fulfill purposes you cannot yet see.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for being a God who calls, guides, and fulfills every promise You have spoken. Help us to listen carefully, obey faithfully, and trust completely—just as Joseph did. Lead us by Your Spirit and anchor us in Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Song
The prophecies:
Each daily devotion on December has focused on some of the prophesies that were fulfilled by the life of Jesus. The odds of one man fulfilling just 8 prophesies: 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. That is 1 in 100 quadrillion. A quadrillion is 1000 trillion. Jesus fulfilled over 300. He is not just a man. He is GOD. (Source: Mathematician Peter Stoner)
