Introduction
A River Runs Through It reminds us that Jesus offers rivers of living water. Believe in Him and let His Spirit flow through your life. A River Runs Through It reminds us of the flowing grace of Jesus Christ. When He said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink,” He offered eternal refreshment to all who believe (John 7:37-38). Just as a river carries life through valleys and canyons, His Spirit flows within us, bringing peace and strength. This devotion reflects on the beauty of rivers and how they remind us of God’s presence, while pointing us toward the promise of living water through Christ.
Reflection
This week, we learned of the passing of Robert Redford, the acclaimed actor and director of the film A River Runs Through It, adapted from Norman Maclean’s timeless book. The Blackfoot River in Montana became the stage for a story of family, love, and life’s mysteries. In Maclean’s poignant conclusion, he wrote, “Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.” That single line mirrors the essence of life itself.
Rivers represent more than just moving water. They hold joy and sorrow, beginnings and endings, time and eternity. Just as a river’s current leads us forward, life carries us toward God’s eternal home. Though we cannot see every bend ahead, we trust that one of those bends will bring us into His presence.
I once floated rivers like the Blackfoot in Alaska, surrounded only by God’s creation. The stillness and beauty humbled me. In those moments, I felt God’s nearness in ways that words cannot fully capture. It was a foretaste of the “rivers of living water” Jesus promised to those who believe.
Life Application
Jesus invites us to believe and receive living water that never runs dry. Scripture reminds us, “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). This means that when we walk with Christ, His Spirit flows through us—refreshing, renewing, and blessing others. Practically, this challenges us to let His love pour into our daily lives so that those around us may experience His grace. Whether through kindness, encouragement, or prayer, we can become rivers of life pointing others toward Him.
