That is who you are—salt and light in a dark world. That is who you are—chosen by Christ to preserve truth and shine His glory; to preserve the Word and shine His light. In today’s devotion, we will explore our divine calling to reflect God’s glory by being both salt and light in a dark world.
Salt in Action
That is who you are. Jesus said plainly: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 6:13–14). When we accept Christ, we also accept the accountability of serving as His ambassadors on this earth. That is who you are. Importantly, Jesus has not left us unequipped. Through His Spirit and Word, we are prepared for the responsibilities ahead. One of our key responsibilities is to be salt—preserving truth in a decaying culture. Salt prevents spoilage, just as believers help sustain righteousness and truth in society. Jesus is not just our personal Savior—He is the “Savior of the world” (John 4:42). Our witness and testimony lead others to this truth. Furthermore, salt adds flavor. We are meant to season the world with goodness, kindness, and joy through our good works.
Light in Action
Paul reminds us: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10). Our lives should overflow with acts that glorify God and point others to Christ. Moreover, Jesus calls us light. We are to illuminate the way for those walking in darkness. As Jesus said: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16). We should live with purpose—preserving what is holy and brightening what is lost. Even a 30-watt bulb can dispel darkness. That is who you are in Christ: a grain of salt and a beacon of hope. So today, rejoice! You are chosen by the King of Kings to live a life that preserves and enlightens His Kingdom.
