God Works, So We Work

The Christian work ethic is rooted in God’s nature. Jesus is always working, and so must we as laborers in His harvest. But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father is working until now, and I am working.’” (John 5:17) From the very beginning, God modeled work. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). His act of creation was work, and He did not rest until the work was finished: “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested” (Genesis 2:2). Jesus also upheld the divine work ethic. Throughout His ministry, Jesus is portrayed in many roles: builder, teacher, shepherd, judge, farmer, potter, gardener, and even winemaker. These titles aren’t metaphorical only—they reflect the truth that God’s character is active, intentional, and diligent. Jesus said, “We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.” (John 9:4).

Every Christian Is a Laborer

“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’” (Matthew 9:37) Christians are not called to idleness. Every day is a workday when we live for Christ. Whether in the office, at home, in ministry, or in the mundane, we are working for a higher purpose. Work becomes worship when done unto the Lord. There are no spiritual “days off.” So what is your work ethic today? Are you laboring for the things of God or merely going through motions? As Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Let your heart be set on honoring Him through your work.
