Introduction
Discover the importance of training children in God’s truth through intentional faith, love, and Christlike example. One of the greatest responsibilities God gives parents, grandparents, teachers, pastors, and mentors is the calling to “train up” the next generation. The wisdom of Solomon reminds us that children are not shaped accidentally. They are molded by what they see, hear, experience, and absorb every day. Training is not simply about rules; it is about forming hearts, directing minds, and pointing souls toward God.
In today’s world, culture constantly competes for our children’s attention. Therefore, intentional Christian training matters more than ever. Every conversation, every correction, every prayer, and every example leaves a mark. We are either helping move hearts toward Christ or allowing the world to train them away from Him.

Scripture
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
— Proverbs 22:6
Reflection
The key word Solomon chose in this verse is “train.” Training implies active participation. It does not happen passively. Athletes train. Soldiers train. Musicians train. Likewise, spiritual formation requires guidance, repetition, patience, and perseverance.
Godly training includes discipline, but it also includes grace. Furthermore, it requires intentional instruction, loving correction, encouragement, forgiveness, and consistent modeling of Christlike behavior. Children often learn more from what we do than from what we say. Consequently, our attitudes, reactions, priorities, and words become living lessons before their eyes.
Many parents carry heavy burdens when children wander from the faith. However, Proverbs 22:6 offers hope. Solomon reminds us that seeds planted in truth are not easily forgotten. Even when children stray for a season, the memory of faithful training can remain deeply rooted in their hearts. In God’s timing, many “circle back around” to the truths they once learned.
That truth should encourage every weary parent, grandparent, or mentor today. Keep praying, loving, modeling Jesus, and teaching Scripture. Your labor is not wasted.
Charles Spurgeon once said, “Train up a child in the way he should go, but be sure you go that way yourself.” Those words remind us that authentic faith is one of the greatest teaching tools we possess.
The world constantly attempts to “train down” our children through confusion, compromise, selfishness, and moral drift. Nevertheless, believers are called to “train up” through truth, wisdom, compassion, and godly example. Every day presents opportunities to shape hearts toward Christ.
Johnny wisely closes with Proverbs 23:7:
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
What fills the heart eventually shapes the life. Therefore, training the heart toward God remains one of the most important investments anyone can make.
