Sharing – Another Glimpse of God
Discover how simple acts of kindness offer glimpses of Christ and teach you to recognize Jesus in the people you meet each day. God rarely announces Himself with fanfare. Instead, He shows up quietly, in a shared grocery bag, a warm meal, or a kind word spoken to a stranger on the corner. This week, a Tuesday morning Bible study reminded me just how close those glimpses really are.

Opening Worship: The Servant Song
Before we open God’s Word, let’s quiet our hearts with a song about serving one another as Christ served us. The Servant Song” gently reminds us that we walk this road together, carrying each other’s burdens along the way.
Scripture Focus
Jesus taught that our care for the vulnerable is care shown directly to Him.
“For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.” They also will answer, “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?” He will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” — Matthew 25:42–45 (NIV)
Because of Christ, believers are joined together as one family.
“To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father.” — Colossians 1:2 (NIV)
Whenever we gather to serve in His name, Jesus promises His presence.
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” — Matthew 18:20 (NIV)
And the Holy Spirit lives within every believer, giving us the very eyes and heart of Christ.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” — John 14:16–17 (NIV)
Taken together, these passages paint a beautiful picture. Christ lives in us through His Spirit, He joins us as brothers and sisters, and He meets us personally in every person we help. That truth changes how we see the next hungry or hurting face we encounter.
Life Application: Little Is Much When God Is in It
This past Tuesday, I joined a video Bible study connected with Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas. Our guest speaker was Daniel Roby, CEO of the Austin Street Center, a Dallas ministry that provides safe shelter and meets the basic needs of the city’s most vulnerable homeless. As Daniel described this work, I was reminded that God often reveals Himself through the ordinary compassion of ordinary people.
Faithful Hands, Small Tasks
My dear friend Patty serves many… quietly and often, especially through The 30th St. Food pantry which is run by the St. Vincent DePaul Society. They provide groceries to about 4000 households per week here in Indianapolis.
Every Wednesday, my friend Tony and I go to Kroger together, which takes the grocery shopping task off my wife Susan’s list. We have gotten quite good at racing my wheelchair up and down the aisles. At Patty’s request, we always buy four bottles of ranch dressing, four jars of peanut butter, and four cans of chicken for Patty to carry to her food bank. She says they never have enough of those items. It seems small, however, “little is much when God is in it.”
Meanwhile, my Susan has recently started serving at our own Second Presbyterian Church’s food bank here in Indianapolis. I tear up whenever I picture her stocking shelves for people she may never meet, but whom God already knows by name.
Recognizing a Brother or Sister
I am, admittedly, an easy target for people standing along the road seeking help. Some call me a soft touch. Yet when I look at them, I see someone’s son or daughter, a brother or sister, and quite possibly a future brother or sister in Christ. They receive a small gift, but more importantly, they receive a heartfelt “God bless you, brother.” That greeting may become their very first introduction to God’s grace. Perhaps they will thank me for it someday in Heaven.
Ordinary Generosity, Extraordinary Impact
I know a dear friend in Indianapolis, John H., a former CEO of a large company, who I have observed walking up to men on downtown street corners and inviting them into a nearby restaurant to “order up” … his treat.
Likewise, a friend in Nashville orders carry-out meals for the people he passes on his way into restaurants. He then delivers those meals on his way back out. Neither man waited for a perfect plan. Each simply responded to the person right in front of him.
God Is Easy to Find
God is not hiding from us. He is all around us, and His Holy Spirit lives within every believer’s heart. Consequently, our calling is simple: let the Spirit express Himself through our actions, both great and small. Little is much when God is in it, and every small kindness becomes another “glimpse of God” for someone who desperately needs to see Him.
A Word from Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in Life Together, “We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God.” The people we meet on ordinary Wednesdays, at grocery stores, and on street corners are rarely interruptions to God’s plan for our day. Instead, they are often the plan itself.
A Brief Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the friends who quietly show me what love looks like. Will I recognize You in the person in need? Teach me to serve as You served. Make me a faithful brother, a faithful sister, to everyone I meet. Open my eyes to see people the way You see them, not as interruptions, but as beloved children You are inviting me to love. Then send me out into the world as Your hands and Your feet. Thank You for Your grace, Your patience, and Your presence in every ordinary moment of this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Worship: Would You Know Him If You Saw Him
Dolly Parton’s “Would You Know Him If You Saw Him” asks a question worth sitting with. If Jesus appeared today in the face of someone hungry, tired, or overlooked, would we recognize Him? This song leaves us with that gentle, necessary challenge.
