Seek Higher Ground: Lead Me to the Rock Higher Than I

Small country church on a hilltop overlooking a lake at sunrise, illustrating the call to seek higher ground with God
Higher Ground

Introduction

Seek higher ground with God when your heart is overwhelmed. Discover how Christ lifts you above life’s storms to stand on the Rock of Ages  Some days the valley feels low and the view feels small. Our worries crowd close, and our strength runs thin. Yet God never intended for us to live at the bottom of the hill. Instead, He invites us to climb with Him, to rise above what weighs us down, and to stand on a Rock that will never move.

Opening Worship Song

Bill and Gloria Gaither, joined by The Oak Ridge Boys, open today’s devotion with a heartfelt plea for God to lead us to the Rock. Let this song prepare your heart to rise above the cares of the day.

Scripture Focus

When David’s heart was heavy, he cried out for a place higher than himself:

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
— Psalm 61:2 (KJV)

In the very next psalm, David names that Rock with confidence:

“He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.”
— Psalm 62:2 (KJV)

Centuries later, Paul gave this advice to the church at Colossae:

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
— Colossians 3:1–2 (KJV)

Together, these verses reveal a beautiful invitation. God does not leave us stranded in the valley. Rather, He calls us upward, to Himself. So let’s consider what it means to seek higher ground today.

Life Application: Why We Seek Higher Ground

Standing on the Hilltop

I once had the opportunity to conduct a service at the rural Campground Methodist Church. It sits on the highest elevation in my home county. As the piano melodiously played an old hymn of the church, I gazed across a historic cemetery where several Civil War veterans rest. Beyond it, beautiful Lake Monticello stretched out below.

In that moment, I was completely engaged with the presence of God. Truly, I was standing on the “Rock of Higher Ground”!

Hilltops have a way of changing our view. From up high, the worries that loomed so large in the valley suddenly look smaller. Likewise, God draws us upward so we can see life from His perspective instead of our own.

This beloved hymn captures the longing of every believer to keep pressing upward with the Lord. As you listen, let it become your own prayer.

What Happens When We Seek Higher Ground

When we seek higher ground with the Lord, He guides us in many wonderful ways. In fact, this upward climb helps us:

None of these blessings come from our own strength. Instead, they come as we stay close to the One who leads us. David understood this well. When his heart was overwhelmed, he did not try to climb alone. Rather, he asked God to lead him to the Rock that was higher than he was.

Setting Our Minds on Things Above

Paul gave similar counsel to the believers at Colossae. Because they had been raised with Christ, he urged them to set their affection on things above. In other words, higher ground begins in the heart and mind.

Scripture also reminds us that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Therefore, what we dwell on shapes who we become. If our thoughts stay fixed on bills, headlines, and hurts, we will live in the valley. However, when we fix our thoughts on Jesus, our hearts begin to rise.

So what does this look like today? Perhaps it means opening your Bible before you open the news. Maybe it means turning a worry into a prayer on the drive to work. It could even mean choosing gratitude when a family conversation grows tense. Each small choice is another step up the mountain.

Climbing on the Rock of Ages

Most importantly, higher ground is not merely a place. It is a Person. Paul wrote that the Rock which followed Israel through the wilderness was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). Jesus is the Rock that is higher than we are. He is steady when we are shaky, and He is strong when we are weak.

Friend, you do not have to climb in your own power. Simply reach for His hand. As you seek higher ground today, remember that Jesus is already there, waiting to lift you up. Standing on Him, you shall not be greatly moved.

A Word of Encouragement

C. S. Lewis captured this truth beautifully in Mere Christianity:

“Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’: aim at earth and you will get neither.”
— C. S. Lewis

When we set our sights on Christ, everything else finds its proper place.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my Rock and my salvation. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. Lift my eyes above the worries of this world. Help me set my mind on things above, where Christ is seated at Your right hand. Give me wisdom to walk in Your ways and strength to resist temptation. Thank You for Your infinite love, which never fails. Today, I choose to climb higher with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Worship Song

Good morning, friend, as you focus on climbing on the Rock of Ages. Tennessee Ernie Ford’s rich, reverent voice carries this timeless hymn, reminding us that Christ is our safe refuge and our highest ground.

Keep Climbing with Us

Thank you for spending these moments in God’s Word today. Keep seeking higher ground, one step at a time.
