Knowledge and Discernment: God’s Recipe for True Wisdom

Spiritual Discernment

Love + Knowledge + Discernment = Wisdom

Knowledge and discernment, joined with Christ-like love, grow into true wisdom. Discover how God is completing His good work in you today.  Good morning, friend. Some days the world feels like a field at harvest time. Everything is mixed together. Good grain and useless chaff blow across our path, and it isn’t always easy to tell them apart.  That’s exactly why Paul prayed the way he did for his friends in Philippi. He didn’t ask God to make their lives easier. Instead, he asked God to make their love grow and to fill that love with knowledge and discernment. The result? Wisdom to choose what is excellent, and lives that shine for Jesus.  Today, let’s look at that beautiful prayer together. You may discover it’s God’s prayer for you, too.

Opening Worship: Be Thou My Vision

This ancient Irish hymn is my favorite, and it fits today’s message beautifully. It asks the Lord to be the vision of our hearts, the source of our wisdom, and the treasure we value above every earthly prize.

Scripture Focus

Paul opens his letter to the Philippians with a prayer that holds today’s whole lesson:

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”

Philippians 1:9–11 (ESV)

Just a few verses earlier, Paul gives us the promise that makes this prayer possible:

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that discernment grows with practice:

“But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

Hebrews 5:14 (ESV)

And James assures us that God is glad to give wisdom to anyone who asks:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

James 1:5 (ESV)

So how do love, knowledge, and discernment add up to wisdom in everyday life? Let’s take a closer look.

Life Application: God’s Recipe for Wisdom

Here’s a simple equation I keep coming back to: Love + Knowledge + Discernment = Wisdom. It’s a recipe worth keeping on the kitchen counter of your heart.

Notice where Paul begins. He doesn’t start with knowledge. Instead, he starts with love. Knowledge without love can make us proud and cold. However, love without knowledge can leave us gullible and easily led astray. God wants both, and He wants them growing together.

A Good Work Already Underway

Before we try harder, let’s rest in Philippians 1:6. God began a good work in you, and He will finish it. Your growth doesn’t depend on willpower alone.

The Bible describes this journey in three stages. First comes justification, the moment we trust Christ and God declares us forgiven. Next comes sanctification, the lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus. Finally comes glorification, when we see Him face to face and He makes us complete.

Most of us live in that middle chapter. I like to think of the Holy Spirit as yeast in bread dough. Jesus used a similar picture in Matthew 13:33, when He described a little leaven working through a whole batch of flour. Quietly and steadily, His Spirit works through every part of us. Some days you may not notice the change at all. Nevertheless, the dough is rising.

Love That Grows With Knowledge and Discernment

So where do knowledge and discernment fit? Knowledge is learning what God says. We gain it by reading Scripture, listening to faithful teaching, and talking with mature believers.

Discernment takes the next step. It weighs what we know and asks, “What honors Christ here?” According to Hebrews 5:14, discernment grows through constant practice. In other words, it strengthens like a muscle.

Think about the choices you’ll face today. Maybe it’s a news story that stirs anger, or a friend asking for advice. Perhaps it’s an opportunity at work that looks good on paper but feels wrong in your spirit. Love moves you to care about the right things. Meanwhile, knowledge gives you God’s truth to stand on. Discernment then separates the wheat from the chaff.

That combination is godly wisdom. Paul says it helps us approve what is excellent. Not merely what is acceptable, but what is best.

Practicing Wisdom This Week

Here are a few simple ways to put this into practice:

  • Open God’s Word daily, even for a few minutes. Knowledge starts there.
  • Pause before reacting. Ask, “Lord, what do You see in this?”
  • Ask for wisdom boldly, because James 1:5 promises God gives it generously.
  • Choose one person to love well today, in a practical way.

Above all, remember the goal. Paul prayed that we would be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ. Our growth isn’t about becoming impressive. Rather, it’s about becoming more like Jesus, to the glory and praise of God.

So take heart today. The One who began the work in you is faithful. He will keep growing your love, sharpening your knowledge and discernment, and shaping you into His likeness until the day you see Him.

A Word of Wisdom

Charles Spurgeon, the beloved London preacher, understood that knowing facts and living wisely are not the same thing:

“Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it.”

— Charles H. Spurgeon

Knowledge fills the mind. However, when love and discernment join it, God turns that knowledge into wisdom.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for beginning a good work in me. Thank You that You never quit on what You start. Lord, let my love grow more and more today. Fill it with knowledge of Your Word and discernment to see what matters most. When I face choices, help me separate the wheat from the chaff. Give me wisdom to choose what is excellent, not just what is easy. Keep shaping me into the likeness of Jesus until the day I see Him face to face. May my life bring You glory and praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Worship: Perfect Wisdom of Our God

Keith and Kristyn Getty’s hymn celebrates the wisdom of God at work in creation, in His Word, and supremely at the cross. It’s a fitting reminder that true wisdom doesn’t begin with us. Rather, it flows from the God who knows all things and loves us perfectly.

Keep Growing in Christ

God isn’t finished with you yet. Let His Word shape your heart each morning, and watch your love, knowledge, and discernment grow together.
