A Small Church in a Hostile City
The apostle Peter had planted a small church in Rome. Historians estimate the congregation numbered around one hundred believers. They worshiped under the shadow of Emperor Nero, a ruler who despised Christians and made no secret of it. Yet these hundred ordinary people kept praying, kept gathering, and kept trusting God.
Paul wrote to this small, embattled church with deep affection. He longed to visit them as a free missionary. Instead, God allowed him to arrive as a prisoner in chains. On the surface, that looked like defeat. In God’s economy, it became the doorway to something enormous.
Chains That Could Not Silence the Gospel
Paul spent his imprisonment chained to Roman guards around the clock. Rather than growing bitter, he began sharing Christ with every soldier assigned to him. Over time, the gospel spread through the entire imperial guard. Even members of Caesar’s own household came to faith.
Think about that for a moment. A hundred faithful believers, combined with one imprisoned apostle’s unwavering witness, reached into the highest levels of the Roman Empire. Their faith did not stay contained. It traveled from house churches to palace hallways, and eventually it helped shape a movement that would touch a city of roughly one million people.
Faith That Refuses to Stay Quiet
Today, some voices insist that revivals no longer happen. Tell that to the college students who gathered at Asbury University in February 2023. What began as a simple chapel service turned into weeks of continuous worship and prayer. News of that awakening spread around the world, much like the faith of those nameless Roman believers spread centuries earlier. Similar movements have continued springing up on college campuses since.
God has not changed. He still delights in using small, faithful groups to accomplish what looks humanly impossible.
What This Means for You Today
You may feel like your faith is too small to matter. Perhaps you’re praying for a wayward family member, sharing Christ with a coworker, or simply trying to stay faithful in a difficult season. Take heart. You never know how far God will carry your obedience.
Your quiet witness at work might reach someone you never expected. Your consistent prayer life might be the seed of a revival you’ll never see this side of heaven. As a result, faithfulness in small things always matters to God, because He is the one who multiplies it.
Be encouraged today. Keep showing up, praying, sharing Jesus wherever you are planted, and trust God with the reach of it.
A Voice That Echoes This Truth
A. W. Tozer often taught that God is searching for people willing to be fully surrendered to Him, because it is through surrendered lives—not merely talented or well-resourced ones—that He accomplishes what human effort alone could never achieve. That is exactly what we see in the story of Rome’s hundred believers. They were not powerful. They were simply willing.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that no act of faith is ever too small in Your hands. Thank You for the believers in Rome who stayed faithful even when it cost them everything. Lord, give me the courage to share my faith boldly, wherever You have placed me. Help me trust that You can multiply even my smallest act of obedience into something far greater than I could imagine. I ask for wisdom to see the opportunities You place before me today, and strength to walk through them with confidence in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
