Know When to Speak: Finding Courage to Share Truth

Other mornings call for bold words. Today is one of those mornings when we need to talk about courage — the kind of courage that speaks up when silence would be so much easier. Esther faced that exact moment. Peter and John faced it too. And if we are honest, most of us will face it before this week is over.

Our first passage comes from the book of Esther, where Mordecai challenges Queen Esther to risk everything for the sake of her people.

Yet Scripture shows us that there are moments when silence is not humility at all. It is simply fear wearing a nicer name. God calls His people to discern those moments and respond with courage instead of retreat.

A Modern Echo of Ancient Courage

We see glimpses of this same boldness playing out in our culture today. WNBA player Sophie Cunningham recently spoke out publicly on a contested issue in women’s sports, and she faced real pushback for doing so. Whatever one’s view of the underlying debate, her willingness to speak plainly despite criticism echoes something timeless: conviction rarely comes without a cost. Believers do not need a national platform to understand that principle. Most of us will face a smaller, quieter version of the same test — a conversation at work, a comment among friends, a moment when truth needs a voice and we are the one standing there.

Peter and John’s Bold Answer

When the religious council ordered Peter and John into silence, their response was simple and unshaken. They could not stop describing what Jesus had done in their lives. That same day, thousands more believed the gospel because two ordinary fishermen refused to stay quiet. Their courage did not come from confidence in themselves. It came from what they had personally seen and heard of Jesus. That is where our boldness must come from too — not from personality, but from genuine encounter with Christ.

What Is God Asking You to Say?

Perhaps God is nudging your heart toward a conversation you have been avoiding. Maybe He is asking you to defend someone who cannot defend themselves, or to simply tell a friend what Jesus has done for you. Whatever it is, remember that boldness is never about being harsh. It is about being honest, even when honesty is inconvenient. Ask the Holy Spirit today for the same courage He gave Esther, Peter, and John — courage rooted in love, offered for such a time as this.
