Scripture Focus
John 16:14–15 (KJV)
“He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
Jesus spoke these words on the evening before His crucifixion while preparing His disciples for His departure. Although He would soon return to the Father, they would not be left alone. The Holy Spirit would come to continue Christ’s work in the hearts of believers.
Notice that Jesus did not say the Holy Spirit would draw attention to Himself. Instead, He declared that the Holy Spirit would glorify Christ by revealing His truth to those who believe. The Spirit continually points us toward Jesus, reminding us of His words, His promises, His sacrifice, and His victory over sin and death.
Acts 2:38 (KJV)
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Peter’s message on the Day of Pentecost explains how we receive this wonderful gift. His instruction is beautifully simple.
- Repent of your sins.
- Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
- Receive forgiveness of sins.
- Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
God has never intended the Holy Spirit to be mysterious or reserved for a select few. Rather, He is God’s gracious gift to every believer who places faith in Jesus Christ.
Life Application
The purpose of the Holy Spirit is much more than giving us spiritual comfort during difficult days. Jesus clearly taught that the Holy Spirit came to glorify Him. Therefore, whenever the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives, our attention is drawn toward Christ rather than ourselves. His ministry is always Christ-centered.
Jesus wanted His disciples to understand this truth before His crucifixion. They feared being left alone. However, the Lord promised that the Holy Spirit would continue His work by teaching them, reminding them of His words, and leading them into all truth. As a result, they could face the future with confidence instead of fear.
That same promise belongs to every believer today. When we repent, trust Christ for salvation, and receive God’s forgiveness, the Holy Spirit takes up residence within us. He is not merely an influence or a feeling. Rather, He is the third Person of the Trinity, living within every child of God. Consequently, we never face life’s challenges by our own strength.
Peter’s Simple Massage
Peter summarized God’s gracious plan on the Day of Pentecost. His message remains wonderfully simple:
- Repent of your sins.
- Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
- Receive forgiveness.
- Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
This progression reminds us that salvation is God’s work from beginning to end. We do not earn His Spirit through good works or religious performance. Instead, God graciously gives His Spirit to those who place their faith in Jesus Christ.
Once the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, He begins transforming us from the inside out. He convicts us when we wander from God’s will, comforts us when we suffer, gives wisdom when we lack direction, strengthens us during temptation, and produces spiritual fruit that reflects the character of Christ. Moreover, He opens our understanding as we study God’s Word and helps us apply biblical truth to everyday life.
King Solomon wrote:
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7a, KJV)
Our thoughts shape our attitudes, our decisions, and ultimately our lives. Therefore, one important purpose of the Holy Spirit is to renew our minds so that we increasingly think as Christ thinks. As we surrender to His leading, selfish attitudes begin to fade while love, humility, patience, kindness, and faithfulness become increasingly evident.
The Holy Spirit never seeks personal recognition. Instead, He continually directs our hearts toward Jesus. He reminds us of Christ’s sacrifice, magnifies His grace, and encourages our obedience. Therefore, when our lives increasingly reflect Christ’s character, we can be confident that the Holy Spirit is accomplishing His divine purpose.
The Christian life was never designed to be lived through human determination alone. Instead, God has given every believer His own Spirit to guide, teach, strengthen, and encourage us each day. What wonderful assurance! We do not walk alone. The Holy Spirit walks with us, lives within us, and faithfully points us to our Savior until the day we see Jesus face to face.

Brief Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank You for sending Your Spirit to teach us, guide us, comfort us, and continually point us to Jesus Christ. Help us to listen to His voice, obey His leading, and allow Him to transform our hearts each day. May our lives glorify Christ in everything we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
