Contentment in a World of Ambition – The Tenth Commandment

Contentment In Christ

Introduction

Explore the theme of contentment in a world of ambition and learn to examine your heart before God amidst success.  Recently, as news is spreading of Elon Musk becoming the world’s first trillionaire following SpaceX’s historic IPO, many hearts may stir with a mixture of admiration and comparison. Scripture calls believers not to envy but to examine their hearts before God. Success itself is not sinful. Throughout the Bible, God often blesses faithful stewardship, diligence, creativity, and perseverance. However, covetousness turns blessing into bondage. The Tenth Commandment reaches beneath outward behavior and addresses the desires of the heart. Exodus 20:17 (ESV) — “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Scripture Reading

Luke 12:15 (ESV) — “And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’”

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV) — “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”

Matthew 6:33 (ESV) “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Reflection

The Tenth Commandment addresses the root of many sins: the discontented heart that looks at another person’s portion and quietly says, “I want that for myself.” Covetousness is more than noticing success. Instead, it occurs when another person’s blessings begin to poison our gratitude for our own. It whispers the lie that God has somehow overlooked us or shortchanged us.

Consider Elon Musk’s remarkable journey. Through Tesla, he has accelerated the adoption of electric vehicles and encouraged innovation in battery technology. He has developed cars that drive themselves and save lives.  Through SpaceX, he has transformed space transportation with reusable rockets, lowered launch costs, and inspired renewed interest in exploration. Starlink has expanded internet access into remote regions and will eventually expand access to the entire world . Furthermore, hundreds of  thousands of jobs have been created through his companies. Such accomplishments demonstrate vision, perseverance, risk-taking, and stewardship of talents that God allows people to develop and use.

Yet the Tenth Commandment reminds every believer that another person’s success is never an invitation to envy. Musk’s wealth is not ours to covet. Rather, it serves as a reminder that God distributes gifts, opportunities, responsibilities, and resources according to His sovereign purposes. Some are called to lead multinational organizations. Others are called to quietly influence a family, church, classroom, farm, office, or community. Every calling matters in God’s kingdom.  Starlink will eventually make the sharing of Christ’s message of salvation available to every person in the world.  Note that this fulfills a Bible prophesy that until now was impossible to imagine. Matthew 24:14: “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”

Avoid Misplaced Ambition

Jesus warned that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. Consequently, the danger is not ambition itself but misplaced ambition. Problems arise when achievement becomes identity, when wealth becomes security, or when comparison becomes a habit. Social media, financial headlines, and celebrity culture constantly tempt us to measure ourselves against others. Nevertheless, God calls His children to measure success differently. Faithfulness, obedience, love, humility, generosity, and devotion to Christ are treasures that neither inflation nor market fluctuations can diminish.

The Apostle Paul learned contentment through changing circumstances. Likewise, believers today must learn contentment intentionally. Gratitude grows when we regularly thank God for daily provisions. Peace increases when we trust our Heavenly Father’s wisdom. Moreover, contentment flourishes when we focus on God’s assignment for our lives rather than obsessing over someone else’s assignment. The Lord who equips innovators, entrepreneurs, pastors, teachers, parents, and laborers also equips each of us for the unique calling He has given.

Therefore, whenever envy begins to stir, let it become a signal to worship. Thank God for His faithfulness. Celebrate the blessings of others. Ask Him to help you steward what He has entrusted to you. Most importantly, remember that the greatest riches available to any person are found in a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

Life Application

  • Thank God today for three specific blessings in your own life.
  • Examine whether comparison has been feeding discontent in your heart.
  • Pray for leaders and innovators, including Elon Musk, that God would grant wisdom and humility.
  • Pursue excellence in your own work while trusting God with the results.
  • Memorize Hebrews 13:5 and meditate on its promise throughout the week.
