Apologetics #3 – It Starts With God

Open Bible resting on a rock symbolizing God's truth as life's foundation.
God’s Truth as Life’s Foundation.

Introduction

Discover why the starting point of faith matters and how beginning with God brings meaning, truth, and understanding.  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” — Proverbs 1:7  “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1  Over the past two Sunday devotions in this apologetics series, we have considered two foundational truths. First, belief in God is not irrational; it is both reasonable and supported by evidence. Second, Christianity is grounded in real history, not myth or wishful thinking. However, another important question naturally follows: if the reasoning is sound and the evidence is compelling, why do so many people reject it?

The answer may surprise us. The issue is often deeper than evidence alone. Scripture teaches that every person approaches life with assumptions, beliefs, and a starting point. Therefore, the real question is not merely what evidence we examine, but where we begin.

Daily Reflection

Modern culture often celebrates the idea that people can approach every issue from a completely neutral position. We hear statements such as, “I simply follow the facts,” or “I believe only what the evidence proves.” While those claims sound objective, the reality is that no one comes to the table empty-handed. Every person begins with certain assumptions about truth, reality, and the meaning of life.

Scripture addresses this directly when it declares that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Notice that Solomon does not describe reverence for God as the conclusion of wisdom. Instead, he calls it the beginning. The Bible teaches that our understanding of everything else flows from how we understand God.

At the most fundamental level, there are only two starting points. Either God is the ultimate authority, or something else takes His place. When God is removed from the foundation, human beings inevitably become the final authority. Our preferences, our opinions, and our reasoning become the standard by which everything is judged.

Nevertheless, this approach creates difficult questions. If humanity is merely the accidental product of blind, purposeless processes, why should we trust our reasoning to arrive at truth? If morality is only a social invention, why do we speak so passionately about justice, fairness, and human dignity? Furthermore, if the universe is ultimately the result of chance, why do we expect it to operate according to consistent laws that science can discover and test?

Every day we live as though truth is real, logic is reliable, and morality matters. Consequently, we depend upon realities that point beyond ourselves. These concepts make the most sense in a world created and sustained by a wise and orderly God.

This is one reason presuppositional apologetics emphasizes foundations. Many people reject God intellectually while simultaneously relying upon principles that ultimately find their source in Him. They appeal to logic when making arguments. They appeal to fairness when discussing ethics. Moreover, they expect consistency when evaluating evidence. Yet all of these assumptions fit naturally within a universe created by God.

Ultimately, the issue is not merely academic. Scripture teaches that God has made Himself known through creation, conscience, and His revealed Word. Yet the human heart often resists what that knowledge requires. If God is truly God, then we are not. That reality challenges our pride, our desire for control, and our independence.

For this reason, apologetics is not simply about winning arguments. Instead, it is about helping people see the foundation upon which all reasoning rests. Evidence matters. History matters. Logic matters. However, the deeper question remains: where are we starting from?

When we begin with God, truth finds its proper place. Morality gains an objective foundation. Human dignity acquires lasting significance. Additionally, the order we observe in creation reflects the wisdom of its Creator. Everything begins to fit together because the foundation is secure.

Life Application

Today, take a few moments to examine your own starting point.

  • Do I begin with God’s truth or with my own preferences?
  • Do I trust His wisdom when it challenges my assumptions?
  • Am I building my worldview on the Rock or on shifting sand?

As believers, we are called not merely to acknowledge God’s existence but to recognize His rightful authority over every area of life. Therefore, let us continually submit our thoughts, attitudes, and decisions to the One who is the beginning of all true knowledge.

Closing Reflection

Presuppositional apologetics does not begin at the end of the conversation. It begins at the beginning—with God. He is not merely a conclusion we arrive at after examining evidence; He is the foundation that makes evidence, logic, morality, and meaning possible. Therefore, the most important question is not simply, “Is there enough evidence?” The deeper question is, “Where am I starting from?” When we start with God, everything else finds its proper place.

Reflections are shared as a glimpse of Christ in my life, in hope that they might further kindle glimpses of Christ in yours.

Have a great week and keep your spirits high!

May God bless you. Amen.

Hugs,

Bill
