The Power of the Cross: God’s Wisdom vs Human Wisdom

Cross silhouetted against sunrise symbolizing God’s power and salvation
Power of the Cross

Introduction

*Paul’s Head-scratcher!

Discover the profound message in the power of the Cross devotion, where death brings victory and suffering reveals salvation. “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” — 1 Corinthians 1:18 Paul draws a clear and sobering contrast: humanity is divided into two groups—those who are perishing and those who are being saved. From a purely human perspective, the message of the cross seems confusing, even absurd. How can victory come through death? How can salvation come through suffering? Yet this “head-scratcher” is exactly where God reveals His greatest power.

“The cross is the blazing fire at which the flame of our love is kindled, but we must get near enough for its sparks to fall on us.” — Charles Spurgeon

Reflection

To the world, the cross looked like failure. Crucifixion was designed to humiliate, to degrade, and to display utter defeat. No one watching Jesus die would have thought, “This is victory.” Yet Paul boldly declares that what appears foolish is actually the very power of God.

This is the paradox of the gospel: God’s wisdom runs counter to human reasoning. Where we expect strength, God often shows weakness. Where we expect triumph, God brings surrender. And where we expect life, God allows death—only to bring resurrection.

For the “lost,” the cross doesn’t add up. It challenges pride, confronts self-sufficiency and demands humility. To accept that salvation comes not by effort but by grace through a crucified Savior is offensive to human nature.

But for those being saved, the cross is everything. It is where sin is dealt with once and for all,  where broken people are reconciled to a holy God. ; and where guilt is replaced with grace, shame with forgiveness, and death with eternal life.

Paul’s message reminds us that God doesn’t operate within the limits of human logic. His ways are higher, deeper, and infinitely wiser. What seems weak is actually unstoppable. What seems foolish is eternally true.

Even today, the cross continues to transform lives. Addictions are broken. Hearts are healed. Eternities are changed. Not through human strength, but through the power of God working through what once looked like defeat.

“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). If we begin to see the cross not as foolishness but as power, it reshapes everything—our identity, our hope, and our future.

Life Application

  • Examine your perspective: Do you view the cross as central to your daily life or just a past event?
  • Embrace humility: Accept that God’s ways may not always make sense—but they are always right.
  • Live in the power of the cross: Walk in forgiveness, freedom, and grace each day.
  • Share the message: What seems foolish to some may be life-changing truth to others.
