Scripture
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14, ESV)
Supporting verse: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” (Isaiah 43:18-19, NIV)
Supporting Quotation
“Forgetting those things which are behind… I press toward the mark.” — A.W. Tozer
Main Body
The Apostle Paul wrote these words from personal experience. Before his dramatic encounter with Christ on the Damascus road, he had actively persecuted the early church. Yet he refused to let past guilt paralyze him. Instead, he chose one focused action: forgetting what lay behind and straining forward.
Failures often weigh us down and whisper that we are unworthy of God’s call. On the other hand, past successes can become comfortable traps that convince us we have already arrived spiritually. Both extremes hinder progress. Paul models a better way—he kept his eyes fixed on Jesus and pressed on toward the heavenly prize.
Therefore, we too must release yesterday. God’s mercy makes every day new. When we dwell on old mistakes or rest on old victories, we miss the fresh work He wants to do today.

Reflection
Pressing on requires intentional focus. It means we stop rehearsing old regrets and stop congratulating ourselves on how far we have come. Instead, we fix our gaze on Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith. He runs ahead of us and calls us upward. As we follow, past burdens lose their power, and future hope grows stronger.
This forward motion brings freedom and joy. We no longer live chained to history; we live empowered by grace. Every step becomes an act of trust that God redeems yesterday and prepares tomorrow.
Life Application
- Each morning this week, pray a simple prayer of release: “Lord, I forget what lies behind and strain toward what lies ahead.” Write down one past burden you will entrust to God.
- Identify one practical goal that draws you closer to Christ—such as daily Scripture reading, serving others, or sharing your faith—and take one small step toward it daily.
- When regret or pride surfaces, gently redirect your thoughts by quoting Philippians 3:13-14 aloud and thanking Jesus for new mercies.
