Fear Came With Sin

C. H. Spurgeon wisely noted, “Fear came into man’s heart with sin. Adam was never afraid of his God till he had broken his commands.” This fear, rooted in guilt, has followed humanity ever since Eden. With sin came separation—and with separation came anxiety.

Today, anxiety is a major struggle. It affects our hearts, our relationships, and our ability to trust. At its core, anxiety is the absence of peace. Spurgeon’s insight reminds us: fear stems from brokenness and rebellion. But praise God, that’s not where the story ends.

The Peace of God

Even the Apostle Paul—who called himself the “chief of sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15)—offered powerful reassurance. He wrote:

The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ.” — Philippians 4:6-7

This peace doesn’t come from denial or avoidance. It comes from drawing near to Jesus and surrendering every anxious thought in prayer. Paul’s words are clear—God’s peace can *guard* your heart and mind, even when nothing else makes sense.

Think on These Things

The Bible teaches, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). What we meditate on shapes us. You can learn to choose to dwell not on fear, but on Christ’s nearness and faithfulness.

As hard as it may be, hand your anxieties over to Jesus. You don’t have to carry them anymore.

Good morning as you accept the peace of God, who guards your heart and mind.

Let Us Pray

Lord, I surrender my anxious thoughts to You. Help me trust You fully and receive Your peace today. Guard my heart and mind through Christ Jesus. Amen.
