Think Before Acting

Think Before Acting

Introduction

Explore the importance of the phrase Think Before Acting in shaping your thoughts and actions through God’s truth.  Think Before Acting starts by allowing God’s truth to shape your mind before it shapes your actions.Every believer faces a daily battle in the mind. Long before words are spoken or actions are taken, thoughts are formed. Therefore, Paul instructed Christians to think carefully about what occupies their minds. The command in Philippians 4:8 is not a suggestion. Rather, it is a practical strategy for living a victorious Christian life. When we dwell on God’s truth, our perspective changes. Furthermore, when we focus on honorable and pure things, our decisions become wiser. By contrast, negative, sinful, and destructive thoughts often lead us away from God’s best.

Pat Barrett – Build My Life (ft. Cory Asbury)

Scripture Focus

Philippians 4:8 (ESV)

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Paul encouraged the church in Philippi to fill their minds with godly qualities:

  • Truth
  • Honor
  • Justice
  • Purity
  • Lovely Things
  • Commendable Things
  • Excellence
  • Praiseworthy Things

Life Application

Solomon recognized the powerful connection between thinking and living:

Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

This timeless principle reveals a progression that affects every person:

  • Our thoughts determine our actions.
  • Our actions determine our habits.
  • Our habits determine our lifestyles.

Consequently, what we repeatedly think about eventually becomes visible in the way we live. If we continually focus on fear, anger, jealousy, or temptation, those attitudes begin shaping our character. However, when we fill our minds with Scripture, worship, gratitude, and godly examples, our lives begin reflecting Christ more clearly.

Paul concluded this passage with an important challenge:

Philippians 4:9 (ESV)
What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Notice that Paul connected right thinking with right living. He did not merely say to admire godly principles. Instead, he instructed believers to practice them. Therefore, we should observe mature Christians, learn from faithful role models, and apply biblical truth to everyday life.

Moreover, God’s promise accompanies obedience. As we think on good things and practice good things, His peace guards our hearts and minds. That peace is not dependent upon circumstances. Rather, it flows from a life centered on Christ.

Good morning as you practice good things and receive the peace of God. Guard your thoughts, shape your habits, and let the peace of God guide your steps.
